You're right for the most part but, I have seen dot pulling trucks in at 12:30am on the Newburgh-Beacon bridge. That was on a Saturday night and it was multiple inspectors not just one. That isn't normal for them though. I rarely see them open at night or on weekends
List of dot roadside check points ?

OH, TX, PA, and NY are where I know of the most often 'roadside' random checks. PA and NY turn their rest areas into them. And Texas will use any shoulder, parking area, rest area, off ramp, etc to do them.
OH has done twice to me on the side of the road up by Youngstown once on I-80 and another on OH-11 just north of 80. Just on the shoulder, Level 3 the first time and a Level 2 the second (I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to get below a vehicle on a shoulder to check brakes for a Level 1 if a rear impact of the stopped vehicle could propel the tires over them. But, police have fooled my before.
Also, on I-70, my friend was stopped by DOT, and then followed down the road to the rest area to perform a Level 1. Never had that happen yet.
Only good thing about NYC, is you will NEVER get a DOT inspection. -
I've seen them shut down a lane of 301 north in MD an do inspections, must have been 100 Dot cops from all over. Here in FL FHP/DOT have been liking the cash boxes lately. AL can be anywhere, got weighed empty just off an exit ramp near Anniston a few months ago. Yeah my empty step deck is gonna be over! Almost every state has roving officers to check us out. The worst states are the ones that don't have permanent scales like NY and PA.

we dont agree on anything, even the most obvious
I wonder how many owner-ops or guys that drive for small companies feel the same way about DOT
no one wants bad trucks on the road, not even the guys who drive them. sometimes, you dont have the funds to keep the truck 100%, sometimes things just happen
not making excuses for guys who dont care, they dont need to be on the road in the first place
but for honest, conscience folks, sometimes that tire can wait a week, or you need a few more dollars to take care of that exhaust leak,
most drivers understand that we need enforcement of codes, but its the harrassment and excessive fines and penalties that drivers try to avoid,
hence the concern about if the scales are open, or where DOT is inspecting
but when i see and hear company drivers, who have a fleet of mechanics that maintain their vehicles, its rather pompous and sickeningRaiderfanatic, kwswan, truckon and 1 other person Thank this. -
In Maryland, I-95 north just after the Fort McHenry toll booths they will often have 1 or 2 officers there doing inspections at all hours of the day or night.
-
I84 in CT from Manchester, CT to the MA line, in warmer months there is a DMV CMV enforcement officer that roams that area, and he ain't scared to blue light you.
-
Hwy 10 and 65 in Blaine MN. And DONT go into the scale on highway 10 in Ramsey MN that guy is a prick.
-
they had the sign flashing southbound on 95 to go onto the scales at 495
if you stayed left and stayed on 95, they had about a dozen DOT vans waiting for you
if you went thru the scale, it was actually closed
