I'll be starting my trucking career soon & this is exactly what I plan on doing. My goal will be 3 years. In fact, I'm not financing anything ever again. What a ripoff.![]()

Saving money is great and being motivated to do it is even better. Just be sure to get some down time evry now and then, dont burn out and go off trucking because of it. Their are lots of trucking jobs that you can make excellent money and not have to be away from home 365 days a year. Get some experience and then find a job that pays good money and you will have the best of both worlds. Have a life man, you only get one!

What a great thread.
We planned on renting a small studio apt while road-bound for the first couple of years, but now we're rethinking this. Both our cars (10 years old) are paid off but I have a couple of student loans that we wish to pay off by the end of the second year of trucking. Once that's done we'll have no bills and we have no kids, so we plan on saving the rest for our retirement. Only problem is that we both eat mostly salads and veggie dishes and very little meat, pastas, and grains, and so we're concerned about our diets. However, it looks like we may be able to manage eating well while running up and down the roads.
If anyone has some creative ways to handle storing fruits and veggies while on the road I'm all ears. Heh. I wonder where I can put my container-sized herb garden. Can't live without my dill, basil, and lavender! :smt031

mistwig, i can't tell you how much that means to me to know you are out there doing the American Dream and living Dept Free! ! ! Sounds like you and Hubby got it all dialed in and are on your way to having all the things you will need to live worry free and happy , i know its not easy now but i think its well worth doing now and relaxing later when you can work the truck for extra fun money or just to have extra savings .
Ever think about maybe putting together a HOW TO COOK book and maybe some Recipes ? might be a big hit Never KnowI am sure there are lots of tips and tricks you have learned over time and what works and what dose not work as far as cooking appliances Just a Thought ,,,
And powerofsolitude you hit the nail on the head ,, i was feeling the same way , very excited to hear it dose work and people are making it happen Awesome ! ! Thank you. -
Beans and rice, rice and beans!
My wife and I got rid of our place and lived on the road. I waited a few months into it before making the decision to sell the house, to make sure she was going to like being otr. I recommend you do the same. When we came home we would either stay with relatives or just get a house on the beach for a couple weeks.
I do recommend that if you make that leap you liquidate as much of your stuff as you can because you will end up paying more for storage than your stuff is worth! (Been down that road) If you have a relative you can leave your prize possesions with I would do that instead of storage.
You will be surprised how much money you will accrue without rent, electric, car, etc...
Good luck man!

What a great thread......hope everyone will continue to post. " A day in the life of OTR" type thing. I think it could be a great sister thread to the "Where are you" thread. Reading the posts gives me the gnawing itch to try OTR, then I quickly think of winter and big cities.
I love reading about OTR daily life tho, thanks to OP for this thread.

Giving up the house doesn't necessitate working 365 days a year. I still take my time off. Sometimes I go couch surfing with family and friends, other times I get a rental car and go camping, sometimes I just park in a truckstop and wander around town for a couple days coming back to the truck to sleep. You gotta have some fun, and blowing a few hundred here and there is not going to matter much in the long run. Sure, I could have had more money in the bank if I hadn't done those things, but I'd also be one grumpy burned-out lady. I'd rather be happy

Like 1nonly said, you need to have some "me" time out there. Enjoy your career while you are out there. You need to have health balance of work and play out there or you will burn out quickly! Besides, one of the big reasons of being out there is because of the freedom. Enjoy some of it!

Thank you all so much for Sharing your info and insight about OTR'' Trucking,
It truly has Confirmed my Thoughts, and Drive, to use trucking as a way to be Free ! ! .
I have worked in a factory , Family Owned by 3 Brothers for many many years lets just say i kinda grew up there , its all i know and i learned a lot about Production ,factory work, time lines , people, Quality Control , safety , and most of all my Favorite,, Steel Forging and Black Smithing , i think its the only reason i stayed as long as i did, i love hot steel and making parts and tools with it and the Rush of being around all the massive powerful Machines used to Forge and heat Steel , the owners on the other hand were greedy, non forgiving ,non caring , Just get it done or there is the F--kin Door ! ! ,, I tell you its not a life i would want anyone to have and trust me i had many friends ask me to get them a job there over the years and i just would not do it, that has to tell you something in that alone, i was good at what i did and they knew it so i was a little better treated and paid well, but the last straw for me was one month before Christmas out of no where they had me lay off my crew, all that was left was me and my 2 right hand guys , needless to say that fallowing jan i quit . Reason ?? ,, Company has over 100 Employees and 6 Different Departments , my Department was slow that year but the others were working round the Clock and over time! so instead of working my men into other departments they hired about 10 new rookies that had no idea what they were doing with no skills at all, my men knew just about every thing and were 3 years plus Employees one was 7 YEARS ,,, not only that but the thought for me to have to retrain and hire new guys after the work picked up was to much to think about, its not easy to train teach and learn new workers this trade and to watch them like a hawk so they don't have to go home with less fingers or body parts , and i have seen my fare share of that but that's another story .
so Trucking has always been something i thought about for years ,i use to talk to the truckers in our loading bay when i had the chance to , i really enjoyed talking to husband and wife teams and wishing that was me .slomocopshow and Onetruckpony Thank this.
