Thanks roadwarrior. It's always nice to hear 20,30,40 year veterans like yourself encouraging me to keep driving forward. I have to admit, sometimes when I think about it, it's hard even for me to think that what I want to do is realistic but I keep coming back to the fact that if guys who have been truckin for 30 years are tellin me to keep pushing forward, then it can't be as unrealistic as some people tell me it is. As for making trucking better, I know it will never go back to the "good ol' days", but I'm certainly gonna do my part to try and get it there. I know there's a lot of problems with harassment and bullying going on out there, but I want to do my best, and with your guys help, to make it known that if you hear "Hellbilly" on your CB, you know that REGARDLESS of your age, race or gender, you're near a friend who will help you any way I can.

I'm not too worried about bullying for myself. I understand I'm gonna have to deal with crap, but at 6'2" and 300lb, bullying has never been a problem. I just have a problem where when I see someone getting bullied, I have to jump in and help. I actually got into an argument with my boss last week about our joke of a "zero tolerance on bullying" policy.

In the beginning when I started trucking I had a apartment car etc etc but I fell in love with being out on the the road so I got rid of my apartment put all my stuff in storage my mom has my car. She drives it and makes the payments. I hardly ever go home. Ive been out since Thanksgiving and I dont have any plans on going home any time soon. I dont talk to most of my family and I dont have too many friends so I really dont have a reason to go home. I once a month take a day off rent a car and go get my hair and nails done in Chicago and my o/o and my dispatcher never complain because I hardly go home anyways. I say if its something you know you really know you want to do then do it!! If you dont really want to be home often get rid of those extra responsibilities and plus you'll have more money in your pockets.

Lady, that sounds word-for-word exactly what I plan on doing. I gotta ask, how is living my dream working out for you? Is it everything I hope for? And mgt, same question, are you glad you did it?

I forgot to mention getting a po box. I had to get a big one for all my mail!!

I love it!!! I cant complain too much. My truck came with a tv with a dvd player and microwave so its like a very small apartment that moves with me.I do miss having a home cooked meal though and the huge closets I had at my aprartment! Also I did kind of get just a little lonely but I solved that by getting a dog. I also suggest getting a credit card if you can or even a secured credit card so you can rent cars. But I love it.

Hey there Hellbilly,
I find myself in the same situation as you: recognizing that this is a great time to make a big change in my life and dive right into a new career I've been thinking about off and on for years now. Finally have myself in the position where I don't need to worry about being around to look after responsibilities. So I've signed on the dotted line and start CDL school in about ten days.
I haven't been this excited about something for years. Not since the last time I recognized the need for a big positive change and I enlisted in the Army (I had enough sense even in my early twenties to know I needed a huge boot in the behind!) That turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. Like you, I've done my research (much of it from lurking on here) and I'm pretty sure this is going to be just as good of a decision for me too.
Decided to go with a formal CDL school here, simply because I know they're going to cover all of the basics and make sure I know what I need to know to move on to the next level when I start training with my company. I took the time to check out and tour a number of the schools in my area and went with one which is both fairly reasonable and also will give me a lot of time in the driver's seat learning what I need to learn. In the meantime, I have my nose buried in that CDL manual too. -
Good to hear bubs, make sure to keep me updated on how you're doing.
