I've looked at the Landstar board but have never gotten a load from it. I forgot to mention that I'm setup with CH Robinson also and have pulled a few for them. They're VERY easy to work with.

set up w/ chr as well i like their quick pay for 1.5%.

I have been moving my husband who is an O/O for the past 2 years and we have our own 53ft dry van. When we originally purchased a van we made a HUGE mistake and bought one that was too high and too old...We spent thousands of dollars repairing the floor boards and my husband could not go to areas with a lot of bridges because the trailer was too high.
We are based out of AZ and as far as working with load boards and brokers go, I have found it better to find a shorter route like AZ-CA until deisel rates come down. Either that or we only take long distance loads for at least $3 a mile, to make up the cheap backhaul rate....It just does not make sense to go far away when you know that you will be coming back for a buck a mile.
This week we took an 850 mile load to Denver for $3K and then and 1000 mile (6k lbs) load to Los Angeles for $1K and finished with a 360 mile load to Phoenix for $1K. So we ended up averaging $2.26 a mile, which I think is decent. -
I am a big fan of CH Robinson, because they have always been able to help me with resources when I am in a bind...They helped me find a warehouses in AZ and CO to reload or store freight, and they have always been able to help me with any trucking related questions I have. They are great with fuel advances and quick pay and the loads are always well coordinated. They also do not need a signed rate confirmation to book a load which saves me time if I am booking a load away from my office...

Just keep in mind that if you are just getting started on your own and you intend to use the load boards exclusively, many of the shippers will ask for broker references that you have hauled for. or 3,6,9,12, etc months active mc#
-
When I started, I had but one broker ask for references. As far as active months with your MC, that never was an issue.
-
Really gears?.......man I have everyone asking me for references......ch robinson didnt......neither did EPES.........I had one turn me down saying they require 18 months active mc#

It looks like the broker environment is different out East than what it is here in the Plains States. Whoduthunk?
