    atrucker,

I understand what you're saying but you have to realize how supply and demand works. I see that all too often where the trucker pays the broker to take the freight... lol

You know what's not so funny is even when you get an over the top rate (or what you mistakenly thought one) then you learn from a disgruntled employee at the shipper or even by accident that the broker still made an easy 25%. And those skinflints knew all along and still tried to get you to accept it for $600 less. Drivers, I've said it before (often to shocked disbelief) and I say it again, do not ever be afraid to quote round trip or better to anywhere. The only suckers for a long time have been us and it's long past time to take some profits. Trucks are in demand. Make these losers pay and stop paying for their BMW's. They need you more than you need them.

Hmmmm...... Someone forgot to tell RedheadWhp that Owner Operator Truck and Cargo Insurance can be similar to , or greater than a
house payment , each and every month , and that is ongoing weather your on the road, resting up or broke down.

I am asking this to gauge rationality of future rates negotiated. I am currently sedentary before moving into action.

According to industry statistics that I found on the web , the company you mentioned (above)made 7.5 million dollars last year.
I have had some dealings with this organization. And you can guess what I have to say about them, and you would probably be right !

Everyone is in it to make as much money possible. Well judging by some of the rates and the fact that those loads are being moved, almost everyone is in it for the money.
But you can't honestly tell me that you are consistently getting round trip rates. If the majority of the loads on the board are in the $1.5-$2 a mile, quoting a rate of $4 is ridiculous, and a fat chance of getting that, even with direct shippers.

The only thing ridiculous is not asking for it. How else are you going to negotiate a $3 mile rate from "posted $1.50-$2.00" if you don't ask for $4? They don't just give it away. If they pay $4 or $4+ then even better but the worst thing you can do is straight jacket yourself to posted rates out of shame and fear. That plays into their hands same as the ugly $2 mile is good mindset. Do all markets work the same and can great rates be expected 7-24/365? Of course not.
