It's easier for a chain hook to bite thru a pocket edge than it is for a chain that's wrapped around a spool. Think about it for a sec. OK, times up!

Thank God I just pull an RGN with no rub rails. Just my cutouts on the side beams and I'm good to go. All this talk of spools etc is starting to get me confused:biggrin_25522:
It does still bug me when I see straps secured ONLY to the rub rail though, I must see that every day. Isn't that illegal now?

What do they think the spools are for?

in reality, it all depends on what the spools are pockets are rated at by the manufacturer.

the straps can be hooked to the rubrail.

probably the reason for not using spools is that if worked loose it could come unhooked.

but i can say in 32 years i have never had a problem hooking a chain in a pocket, never had a pocket collapse, etc.

but i have seen guys that could tear apart the inside of a crowbar.

OP- Did you check with your Safety Dept. as to what they want you to do?

Company I drive for forbid us from looping around the spools period. They even have someone snooping through the yard on the weekend checking our securements. Get caught looping around a spool, or hooking to the pocket is an automatic write up.

The Transcrafts also have a sticker showing to only loop around a stake pocket and hook the chain onto its self. Both steel and alum.

The load rating assumes spreading the load over both welds on the pocket. You drop a chain through the pocket and hook to it you're only tying off to 1 weld.

Hooking straps to the rubrail is NOT legal! However most scale guys don't know or won't write it up.

Its name says it all...rubrail not security rail. It is there to protect straps form being cut or compromised during impact.

But then again, what do I know?:dontknow: I only play with chains...
