It is a shame that so many of those older cars were crushed under the cash for clunkers fiasco. Today's cars are not nearly as well built. You could probably build 3 or 4 of todays cars out of the metal of one of those old cars.

This stuff sure brings back memories. Dually in the belly??? Even if it were a chasis-cab; I don't see it. I'm not saying it didn't happen. I'm wondering why it was even attempted. I hauled more than a few out of Baltimore years ago. I truly believe the " it's not just a job; it's an adventure" originated from a car hauler.

I wish I could quote inches, or trailer make/model but I was new in the buisness at the time and I couldn't tell you what kind of trailer it was.

I'd say the guy got #### lucky somehow getting it in there. But getting it out? Notgonnahappen.com.

As for getting cars up the ramps "blind" do a lot of you guys still "ride out the window"? Dangerous, sure, but you can keep an eye on if you're gonna barrel-roll off the side of the truck. (I've SEEN this done,,, I wouldn't do it!)

We were nice to our guys, in winter we'd fire up the whole lot. (actually, we had to move EVERY car when it snowed anyway.) Since rigs came daily, but often after hours it wasn't hard to find our waiting loads were still relatively warm.

They could license for 35,000 and could be legal, depending on the cars. I think you could be pushing it on some load combinations. A friend of mine who has a dually has a 3 car and wants to buy a 4 car. He is currently licensed for 26,000. He told me that if he buys a 4 car that he will need to raise his registration up to 35,000.

I've driven 14 wheel, one ton & trailer combos @ 33K lbs. Mind you, this was 1984; 454 gas motor and 4 speed manual trans, and nowhere near enough brake!:biggrin_2554: I know electric brakes are vastly improved, but I'd have to test drive one to be convinced these newer setups have enough stopping power. It was such fun to lock up the front tires if someone got stupid in front of you!:biggrin_25513:

You guys are spoiled with these new diesels! 100 miles per side was living large on fuel, usually only 75 or 80 miles. Exhaust donuts were a wear item; you could actually see the manifolds glowing in small town storefronts at night! We actually put headers on because we got sick of changing the donuts. The pipes and a pair of Walker Bills let 'er sing a sweet song, too! It'd drive you nuts anywhere close to the speed limit (55 back then,) but around 70 it'd mellow out and it was time to stroll... for few things sound as right, as a big v-8 growlin' in the night.:biggrin_25514:

I know some guys who haul cars, and I'm going to be switching from LTL to cars in a few weeks, the only axle that goes overweight is the trucks, with 4 cars its almost always over by 500-1000#, but that depends on the size of the cars as well.

as for brakes, my truck has the exhaust brake and I love it, I never have to set my trailer brakes very high..
