Today, your representatives in Washington will likely be visited by folks participating in the “Stand Up for Trucking” fly-in – a lobbying effort that says it is all about promoting trucking as part of the next highway bill. Unfortunately, this fly-in has no room for small business truckers like yourself because it is really all about pushing Congress to do one thing: include a truck size and weight increase in the next highway bill.
Small business truckers need to make their message on this issue heard loud and clear: “Big Trucking: Sit Down!” While folks like the American Trucking Associations and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce see bigger and heavier trucks as a money maker and as a way to boost their profits to shareholders, small business truckers know that this policy will only drive up their costs of doing business.
With a national bigger and heavier policy change, truckers will need to buy new trailers to replace the perfectly good trailers they use every day, they will be forced to pay more for fuel as they haul heavier loads and pull a now heavier trailer. Insurance and repair costs, things that these big businesses never see, will rise as well under this change. With small business truckers making up 96% of the entire trucking industry, Congress needs to hear from you that these new costs are real and will have a negative impact on your family incomes.
To contact your lawmakers, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and provide the operator with your home zip code. The operator will connect you with the office of your elected officials.
