    One other local area driving option that you may be overlooking: food service/delivery carriers will also have "shuttle" drivers.

    I don't think the "shuttle" option involves customer stops/loading and unloading.

    With the food service sector--you wouldn't have to start off working the docks, and play the extra-board (i.e., on-call :rolleyes:) game like you probably will with the LTL sector.

    Also, with the food service sector--you won't need any of the endorsements to go ahead and get some experience.

    With LTL--you'll need ALL the endorsements (tanker, hazmat, doubles/triples) to play on their team.

    But get those endorsements anyway--that's usually where the good money is, in trucking.

    Just some more food for thought (pun intended :D)....

    Again, thanks everyone! One thing I'll certainly miss about otr was the times my trainer was quiet. The open road, how awesome Nashville looked from the interstate. Wish I could have hung out more but it seems terminals & truck stops are the otr life. Sure if i can get some years/experience in i can command top pay and uber about on resets but my 62 year clock is ticking, 11 years to retirement. Man driving down 19, south from Atlanta... all that cotton. So much history good/bad but one thing i was left in awe of is how fricking great our country is, how wonderful the people can be and how lucky i was to be born here.

    Lual, been on call most of my life, doesn't bother me until companies play semantics and call it standby/no pay. Quit a pretty good hospital job locally for that very reason. Director was so perplexed when i called him on his BS and applied that good old fashioned reasonable standard regarding the industry standarb/being compensated so i can report to work/function on 30 minutes notice. Sadly i had 2 week noticed my previous company, grass is always greener right?

    Solid advice on the endorsements. Tanker/Hazmat 1st endorsements on my radar once employed. Doubles/triples trying to resist, as a new driver watching those things skitter around on the round in the wind terrifies me. Don't need to be losing the opportunity to drive because of an avoidable incident jacking my insurance rate.When my acquaintance with his own authority told me about insurance for me at approx $1500 per month until 6 months experience and then about $900-$1200 6 months to a year and then finally normal rates after a year things started to make much sense of who can afford to hire new drivers.... usually not the top choice companies.

    You’re using the wrong search terms. Simply get back into Indeed and search for CDL. That’s it. If local is the preference, keep the search within 50 miles of your zip code. Your first time searching, look at everything. Going forward, search the same time everyday and look at only the last 24 hours so it’s all new stuff.

    Even if the company has requirements, apply OR go on their website and see what other listings they have. Don’t forget to also look into all of the mega and midsized operations. They have job listings in their website.

    I will say that for local work, having your endorsements like hazmat, doubles/triples, and tankers will increase your chances.

    Something else to think about/consider....

    Going into a recession, the food service world will probably do better at avoiding layoffs, than elsewhere.

    Elsewhere here on the Forum--LTL personnel/drivers are already being laid off.

    If you sign up/get on with an LTL carrier, and they later lay off--who do you think they will most likely lay off, first? :confused: o_O

    Just some more "food" for thought (again--pun intended :p :D).....

    I took dying as the first job, recession proof. I'll try hauling milk as my into retirement gig. Thanks for all the search terms everyone. They all yield different results on indeed.

    Incidentally the tanker job i took didn't advertise on indeed rather local paper and facebook. I don't do facebook and knowing what i know now if i ever need a job in the future looks like i'll be signing up for facebook so as to not miss good opportunities.

    I hope my journey and all this great advice can help anyone else out!
