Hello All,
I am a 49 year old Male who decided to make a career change from the automotive aftermarket industry to the trucking industry. I was single, with no kids and nothing to tie me down, so for me it was a no brainer to make the switch from an industry that had burnt me out. I intended to go OTR and was very excited as it would allow me to see the country from a totally different view. Well I went and found me a Woman and she really threw a wrench in my OTR plans...actually really happy she did as she is a fine woman. So OTR is not an option now and I will be graduating CDL school soon, so I am looking for advice on local/regional jobs that would get me home every night or close to every night. I also have a friend who is a bus driver for OCTA who said he could help if I was interested. I know the bus driving options requires a passenger endorsement and additional training.I am open to suggestions and would appreciate any help or advice you all could give me.

Do you want boring or physical?
there is always food and booze delivery. Good money but hard work and not to be a dick but I wouldn’t want to get into that at your age unless you’re in good shape. Then go for it.
you could do some dump trucking, pretty boring but super easy.
readymix can be good money, probably decent in California. Money is hit or miss depending on location. It’s either really good or complete trash. It’s a good job for the guy who doesn’t want to sit all day and you’ll drive a truck some ridiculous places but the hours are horrible.
You could look into an equipment rental place like sunbelt. Here they pay really well for what you do, plus you get to get out of the truck a lot but it’s not hard work.
There is always tanker work, might be tough to get into right away but you could always try. Maybe shoot for asphalt at first and once you got two years switch to cryo or chemical. I don’t think fuel pays very well.Last edited: Oct 30, 2019
