local NC work?

LOL..you know how that goes with the name change thing. Hanes then Sara Lee now back to Hanes. That plant over on Stratford was old and falling apart. They moved most of it out to the warehouse in Rural Hall. They haven't made anything here in NC in years. All those plants did was ship the materials over to south america or Mexico and then the finished product was shipped back here. It's kind of sad. Those were some decent paying job. But they are almost all gone now.

You might look at Dillon Transport in Morehead City. They have a pretty steady run between Wilmington and Oxford hauling molten asphalt. It's pretty easy work and pays $140+ a trip.

 

Chief, I've been off the road for almost 10 years. Thought about driving again, looked at doing local Surprise, have to have at least 1 year of recent (like within the last 3 years) experience to even be considered by most companies (a couple of ads I saw said 6 months). It's a insurance thing.

So then I checked out some of the big national companies. Most of the better ones also want recent experience or recent schooling. For schooling, some wanted the whole shebang, some said just a refresher. I finally found a flatbed outfit that will take me on with my CDL and no recent schooling or experience. But I will have to go out with a trainer, for up to 6 weeks (less if he thinks I'm good to go solo) It's OTR, but they a real good about getting you home on weekends, although it might be only for a 34 hour restart sometimes. I can handle that for at least a year. If the money is good, and the wife and I find it do-able, then I'll just stay with it and forget local.

I drove local heavy haul years ago, and I still think the hours were worse than when I was OTR! It was hourly pay, and I made good money, but worked 7 days a week, usually from 7A to 10 or 11P and slept most of Sunday! Wasn't worth it.
