Do you have a Pro Drivers office in your area? They are a temp company for drivers. The pay is hourly, usually $10-$13 per hour and you're home every day, driving for dozens of different local companies. Sometimes, you might go for a few days without work, though. But, if you accept everything they offer you, they can keep you busy.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

yes. we have temp driving companies. I actually applied to one and then ended up finding a REAL trucking company to work for. I called the temp place a while back and they're not even hiring. not sure if I'd want to work some where for a few weeks and then they would try to move me to a different location/job/shift that I didn't want.
"if you accept everything they offer you"
I'm afraid that I'm one of those "lazy Americans" who won't do just anything for money. there's a name for those people - they're called "prostitutes." -
I wouldn't worry about getting used to driving for one company for a few weeks. With the economy the way it is, temp agancies are lucky to put you behind the wheel for 20 hours a week.

Cheif, have you consisered hauling grain? This is the busy season and alot of grain moving now. You could check with local companys or farmers. I farm but this time of the year I drive just about every day. Just a thought

I don't know anything about that. I've pretty much decided to look for a gig as a security guard and maybe go back to school and study something for which there is a demand. if things pick back up in a year or so, I might look at trucking again. but I doubt I'll go back.

Chief,
My husband is an otr and we are looking for a local job for him in upstate SC or NC. We have no life with him gone for two weeks and home for two days. We are right there with you! I hope we both find what we are looking for! Keep us posted! -
Are these guys really that bad?
They are looking for drivers in Wilmington, NC pulling containers.
$13/hr local or .35/mile otr day trips to Eden,Nc and back.
They said you would make 800-$1000/week, home every night and some saturdays.
The benefits were not bad but I did not get a good feeling after talking to them. They didn't want to offer any info-it was like pulling teeth. -

Yeah I think I will pass.
I read something that came up on a search online about them.
It was about a workman's comp case where a drop and hook driver was forced to fill in for a flatbed run, the guy was older and not in that great of shape.
He had to climb up and tarp/secure the load, he went home having chest pains and eventually died from a heart attack.
I have a TWIC card for getting into the ports and it's worth more than $13/hr. -
excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is a "twic card?" I've seen that mentioned on here several times.
