Looking to pay my way through CDL school and hoping to find a local P&D job out of school. There are some places in my area that state they hire new CDL drivers out of certain accredited schools.
Question is, is coming right out of trucking school into a local P&D job more difficult or less difficult that OTR? Skillwise. Seems like most people on this forum focus on OTR trucking and not too much mention of local work.
Interested in driving a truck and getting CDL, but want to be home every night.
Local P&D or OTR?

P&D is tougher because more people want those jobs than the overabundance of dime a dozen OTR jobs just sitting there open. They pay hourly and most are home daily. Plus, you need some experience to run those jobs imo because they require more skill. Mostly city work, in traffic, making tight turns, lot of backing (some tight spaces). OTR jobs are 98% open-road driving, basically just holding the wheel and staying awake unless you hit a major city at rush hour or it’s time to load or unload.

Which city are you near in CT. Maybe we can help you find a local job right out of cdl school.

Most LTL companies offer there own schooling now. You will be hired part time and go to school. Then once you get a cdl you will already have a job with that company. To me it beats an outside cdl school hands down.

Call ODFL directly they have their own training program . They’ll pay for your school . Then go linehaul, not P and D. 8-12 hours of drop and hook . You’ll start on the PM shift . If you can’t do over night then do P and D. But with linehaul you can make six figures . I think they top out close to forty an hour
