I don't think any of these mechanics could find their own ### if it wasn't in their pants! They are doing the I'm pull this part and see, then pull that part and see, and still can't figure it out. I'm going to have a whole new truck soon! Still in Amarillo.....

That right there is what knocks a lot of new and/or unimformed O/O's out of the business. If that money was coming out of your pocket, you would be in bad shape by now (None of this is meant to blame you btw...its a learning experience). These shops are famous for milking 10's of thousands of dollars out of repair bills. Their inability to diagnose and repair a truck...that they are being PAID to diagnose and repair... is inexcuseable. The problem is...there is no good answer. They don't know what to do, so they keep playing trial and error at the truck owners expense. It can get really deep.

Why did I bring O/O into this? To make a point. If you are responsible for the repair bills, like it or not, you better get good at diagnosing your own truck when it has a problem. You better be able to take it in, point to the problem and say "replace that!". If not, your chances of being taken for very, very costly ride are pretty high. That's the biggest problem I have the emissions engines. They are hard to diagnose and then you're left in hands of these half-qualified mechanics to diagnose it for you...all missed calls paid for by the owner.

Its something to think about before you buy a truck or sign a l/p agreement. Do you know enough about that truck to keep it out of the "lets change this...oh, well lets try this, and this and then that game"?

If a shop starts down that road I simply inform them that I hired them to fix my truck, not to work on my truck. And any work or parts not necessary for the repair will be at their own expense. Any time lost due to unnecessary down time will be at their expense.

If that's a problem for them, they are invited to speak to my attorney.

I learned to do this from a guy that owns a shop.

There has to be a stopping point somewhere. I've seen it happen a lot. But, the new guys don't always see it coming. The shops know very well how to play it...string you along. I've been had a few times myself, but not for too much luckily. Its not always a scam either. A lot of times, they simply don't know what to do...but its still expensive.

That is true sometimes. A lot of these so called technicians are trained to plug in the computer and do what the computer tells them. If you're lucky, you get a real mechanic who actually knows something.
