That sounds like a mangled appendage waiting to happen. I'm not sticking my arm under there while he smokes the tires in reverse.

If you tighten that nut it will release the jaws. You will need to re adjust after connecting to the next trailer. The fact that the nut is backed almost off means the jaws are wornout. The jaw kit can be replaced without removing the 5th wheel but it's a dirty job either way. The bushings/pins are likely worn out on both sides as well.

Might be time to rebuild the fifth wheel. I just did that. Similar issues and had some play to the kingpin. About $500 for a rebuild kit.

I'm sure the shop will get right on that when I drop this load in Denver. Matter of fact, they're going to get on a number of problems or I'll be heading to the airport and flying myself to Phoenix to get a brand new truck with an inverter.

I guess I should have specified using a 5th wheel puller. I always use one (unless the tractor has air release) so I didn't think to specify. But yes dont be sticking your arm under there, use a 5th wheel puller. Bonus in using one is it helps open a tight jaw without as much fighting.

Sounds like he's staying Hooke and headed to Denver. If he tightened that nut it pulls the fork (lock) away from the jaws. When those fifth wheels develop slop, you back the nut off which allows the fork to add more pressure on the jaws, forcing them closer together. Tightening against the king pin. This adjustment should only be done by a mechanic.

What is the make of the 5th wheel? There have been issues.

Be thankful you did not have the opposite problem of the jaws releasing, like on the highway~!

Yeah, but it was still cool as heck to watch! That was really interest and informative to see how they work. The 5th wheel is something I've always been somewhat terrified to deal with. I always call fleet for even the slightest issue. That video was pretty cool to see
