Log book not needed for local?

I have another question since i have you. We our a utility construction company and most of our work is within the 100 mile zone. however our guys to drive from job to job in the same town multiple times a day. Do they have to change duty status every time they drive from one job to the other even if its only a few miles down the road??

 

So some of the guys are in bucket trucks or CDL trucks haulig our directional drills going from job to job. So the only driving they do is commuting from our shop to job to job in our town and beyond.

 

No. If they're staying within the 100 mile radius, and being relieved of duty no more than 12 hours after starting their day, no log book is needed. Therefore, there's no duty status to change

 

Right but how about if the guys come on duty at our shop in Grand Junction. Drive 125 miles to Durango. So they will log that drive time to new town. Then they go to on duty status. Then they drive to a couple other job sites in that same town maybe only 10 mins away from each other. Do they have to keep changing that status form on duty then driving 10 mins the on duty again..... or just be on duty for all the time after the initial drive from Grand Junction?

 

I'd just show on duty for those short hops around town, and log the trips from home base to Grand Junction and back

 

all the time moving in one town can be shown, collectively, on a paper log...show driving into XXX town and go on line 4 and add those 5 and 10 min drives up and put the amount on the end...

Here is the guidance:
Question 6: How should multiple short stops in a town or city be recorded on a record of duty status?

Guidance:
All stops made in any one city, town, village or municipality may be computed as one. In such cases the sum of all stops should be shown on a continuous line as on-duty (not driving).The aggregate driving time between such stops should be entered on the record of duty status immediately following the on-duty (not driving) entry. The name of the city, town, village, or municipality, followed by the State abbreviation where all the stops took place, must appear in the “remarks” section of the record of duty status.

So all the drive time still needs to be recorded, but it can be recorded in a single block Say they move the truck 3 times for 5 minutes each, that's a 15 minute block they should account for.

That said, for when outside the exemption you do need to use an ELD if (on a per driver basis) it's more than 8 days in a rolling 30.
