Will be driving a pick up and 40' trailer from Ca to Wis next week. I've done this a few times for this company I work for. Was never explained anything about a log book though. I was popped last time in Illinois for no log, even though I had just left the motel and had the receipt he still made me sit for 10 hours.( was empty too)??
Actually he was pretty nice about it didn't write a ticket to me. Every time he'd ask a question and I'd give him my what's that answer he'd just shake his head. (oh I did have a DOT green card and he wrote the Co. a ticket for something?))
Anyway sense I'll have no sleeper will i have to show motel receipts? Or can I get away with just putting down the time
I stop driving to rest ? Anyone have a clue on this type of situation ?
Would appreciate any information on this. Thanks![]()

Your log should show driving and on duty time. The time you are stopped for the night should be shown as off duty. Some of the DOT will ask for motel receipts, others do not. Technically, what you do on your time off is not their business. You could have spent the night at a friend's house, or inside the truckstop watching tv all night.

Under 26K used in commercial purposes must follow all the regs as a semi except for one. You don't need a class A UNLESS you are hauling a placarded amount of hazmat. If that happens and/or you go over 26K then you have to have class A and every thing else a semi has.
Door lettering, USDOT number, MC number, log book, medical card, annual inspection for the truck/trailer........etc. And yeah you'll have to show motel receipts or convince the DOT cop you stayed at a buddies house. Most states do not enforce these federal laws but more and more states are. WY for sure will, FL does, sounds like IL is getting there.
Stay out of IL if you are worried. That'll be one less state to worry about.
WHATS a DOT green card? Chances are if you get caught again you'll have bigger problems. It'll be harder to convince the cop the second time that you really didn't know.
Early in my driving career I was able to convince a cop one time that I didn't really know. After that I didn't even try. But I was running local and seeing the same guys every day.

While you are correct that it is none of their business I wouldn't recommend giving them this answer. -
I have asked them where in the FMCSA does it say I have to sleep.

What was their response? -
Blank look, and then he said it was not the point. Went on my way and so did he.

I know of a driver who was in a 1 ton, slept in the back seat, no motel receipt. Scale house said it was not qualified and put him out of service right at the scale house. Would not let him unhook and go to motel or anywhere to eat. Made him sit in the front seat for his 10 hour break.
Seems dumb that he could sit in front of the steering wheel and be considered off duty, but could not sleep in the back seat. -
Brickman ....Green card ? the medical card is green , that's what I'm calling a green card
. I just went and got a log book seems simple enough I'll make sure and have motel receipts on hand . Thanks for the replies

Dont forget that your logbook should show your prior 7 days hours of duty.
