I log 10 in the sleeper, but if I am goofing around I am line 1. Better off logging off duty than showing sleeper and out of the truck. Falsifying can be costly. Better off being not up to date to last duty status then get busted for falsifying logbook.

As I've said several times . You have to worry more about attorneys than the DOT . You never know if some idiot is going to kill themselves running under your truck . Their family gets an attorney and the first thing they go for is log books , fuel receipts , faxes , and possibly your Pilot Payback card . Show any transactions while you were logging sleeper and they got you .

I agree with that part. But as for sleeper time, how many of you older guys especially need to sleep 8 hours? I haven't slept 8 straight in maybe 15 years or more...and since my method of fighting insomnia is to "change the channel" by getting up and reading or surfing the net for an hour while my sheets cool off, as far as I'm concerned, this is all sleeper time, because that's how I sleep.
The other concern in this is reality. Sleeper time is intended for you to get the body repaired for the next haul, and we all have different recovery rates for mind and body. One size does not fit all, and I'd suggest that you do what you know works for you, but don't push the envelope. Get your rest when you can, often as you can. And if that hour of surfing, gabbing on the cb, reading or pickin' guitar (or my mandolin) relaxes you, then so be it.
It's called "living" ociffer. Helps us get to sleep.

You can combine sleeper with off duty to make 10 . That's been discussed here . I rarely sleep more than 6 hours . The rules are ridiculous you are either on duty or in the sleeper but those are the rules . The odds of being written up for a violation are small . But those are the rules

Well, my point was, if I'm not sleeping, what's the diff between playing guitar in the bunk or in the seat? I'm still soothing the savage beast, as long as no one knocks on the door.

My 10 hour break was over at 8:30 this morning, but I did my pretrip at 7:00 and logged it at 8:30 til 8:45. I even had to air up a tire. Those air hoses that hook to the glad hand will not roll up when it's cold. If you drive a day cab don't buy one, it takes up the whole sleeper til it warms up and you can roll it up.
I love this thread, right now I'm in the sleeper but I'll log it off-duty.:biggrin_25525:

or vice versa means or "50 trucks and one car"

? got my permit, 26 or 27 months ago, been on the road employed for 24 months as of this month. So I say in two years I been dot'd 3 times... twice at the scales and once on the side of the road... and yeah had my book looked at... once while I was sitting on the scale... light didn't change so I just sat there, made the shrugging my shoulders look at the window... and the guy came running out to the truck, looked at it, said I could go... kinda weird huh? but true...

your impression may be I think they don't take them seriously... but actually I think they do take them very very seriously, that doesn't mean they are out to get you and everybody else on some horse crap personal vendetta... you pull in, they look, if your stuff isn't square, they right you up... no biggy and it definately isn't personal unless you make it so or if as mentioned you are being stupid. stupid can mean two things; not being polite and courteous, or driving a dangerous (pos) down the road that you obviously have not been doing your trip inspections on or you would know and would have written record of dangling wires, bald tires, leaking shocks, broken bolts, and oil leaks described in cups instead of drips all over your under carriage.

put out of service for a reason I would think...

    they can't all be zingers:biggrin_255:

tell ya what I can attest to, especially from truck'in but from all the jobs I've ever had...

there are all these horror stories circulating about; food inspectors, dot, hiway patrol, building inspectors, teachers, or basically horror stories from the peon about what the person in authority did to them.

most of the whiners are whiners...

most of the stories are stories...

most of the time... we all get exactly what we deserve... it just isn't what we wanted... so we excuse ourselves, blame others, and concoct a story and reason as to how it could happen to you to... hoping to gain a little sympathy and support from those around us.

he crawled around until he found something to write me up for...

imagine that, almost like he had a list of stuff to check... and almost like he went down the list from top to bottom... all thorough and ridiculous...

almost like he expected me to have that same list and to have crawled under there myself and corrected stuff I found wrong before he pulled me in for inspection??? lmao!!!

do they know what that stuff would all cost?

no and probably don't care... not their problem...

but they aren't out writing stuff up that isn't wrong... trying to "get you"

they don't lurk and ask for log books in the men's room...

but I bet they are all pretty good at math... and if you been loose leafing and logging a 64 mph average, that just might be a red flag... to look a little closer...

most of mine are in the 48-57 mph category (stupid slow) so maybe that's why they glance and hand it back as its obvious I suck at cheating...

    inspecting the truck?

not mine, right away buddy... I'm getting paid hourly... take your time...

Attitude and a tight truck and they don't look to hard, with no red flags, they know their time is better spent elsewhere is my impression.

and this is the main point... there are plenty of morons... for them to legitimately nail...

like writing you for 56 in a 55

    or... wait ten minutes...

zing.... 68 in a 55... and they still cut it back to 63 for you...

they don't need to harrass anybody... plenty of idiots will show up for their turn in good time...
