OK, you're crazy. DOT gives the elogs guys a pass, because they don't want to deal with the computer and they figure that it's keeping us on the legal side anyway. They spend their time (from what I've seen) auditing the paper side... and we all know why.

Part 'n parcel of the decision to move to elogs was the CSA program, and the last compliance audit FMCSA did on us prior to CSA. The inspectors wanted none of the paper trail (toll, fuel receipts, etc...) and only looked at electronic location tags vs logged position. At that point, management decided that matching a GPS location provided by an electronic log to say a PrePass or EZPass electronic location would cause us less problems. Plus the advantages of integrating the electronic HOS data into the dispatch/load planning function. Seems to be working very well here- almost zero sitting around- unless you toss in the towel and tell 'em to leave you alone for awhile.
You'll notice there is nothing about safety in all of that...
Makes sense for the fleets, it's stupid for the individual owner/operator. -
