unfortunately I've had to do this and have to "fudge" the book once in a while in my current situation.I took what I call a "log book 101" course from an older experienced driver who helped me along the way when I first started out driving.I live in a area where there aren't many decent opportunities (with out going OTR) so I guess that is why I deal with my current situation which is a small family owned company that doesn't care how it's done as long as the load gets delivered or picked up.

If you run absolutely legal, you will be driving tired and trying to sleep when you are not tired.. how you can you start driving at say 6:00am drive your 11 hours, just say you drive 11 strait, it bed time at 5:pm I cant go to sleep at 5:00pm so I go eat and shower etc now its 6:00 pm, still not tired so i go to bed anyway watch T.V., Finally at 10:00pm i might be tired enough to go to sleep, at 3:00am im legal to drive but Im tired i only slept five Hours... So I FUDGE and drive untill 8:00 then stop eat take my shower and go to bed and sleep untill i can legally be where Im sleeping at... The HOS are not for safety they are for control and to keep certain groups HAPPY.....

If you want to sleep by the side of the road 45 minutes from home because you're out of hours, you certainly may.

I'll be home, snug in my bed after a hot shower and a nutritious meal and "fudge" accordingly.

If you want to push on while you are falling asleep because stopping for a nap would burn your 14 or 16, feel free.

I'll pull over, sleep until I'm safe to drive again, then carry on & adjust as necessary.

If we could just get everyone to follow every rule and regulation to the letter, all the time, we would a nice little totalitarian state here.

Very well said Boardhauler! The MAN doesn't know sh$t about truckin'. Just like everything else the Government touches, it turns to ####e!

It's common sense, we are not saying to fudge in order to run 24/7, what we are saying is that fudging on your book makes you a safer rested driver if you do it right.

I'm with the "fudgin' is better" crowd on this.

There were times when I worked for a small (10 truck) carrier that I wouldn't do my logs but once a week sometimes. Just no way until the weekend to "catch up". And, I'll admit, it was kind of fun to see if I could get away with running that way; big rush when the scales were either closed, or I got the green light, LOL. Running around some of the scales also could get the adrenalin pumping.

Now I work for a mega carrier that has elogs, governed trucks, etc., etc. For me, that's probably where I belong right now because there is no way I can run the way I used to (I'm 64), but I will tell you straight out that it's nowhere near the FUN it used to be, either!

The newer drivers have no idea.
