I know a pilot on billings Montana, He flies out and is home everyday.. If Im 30 miles from home and my elog tell me im out of time, I have to stop and sleep in my truck.. I can drive my truck 11 hours and then i have to stop for 10, thats all good. but I can drive my 11 hours and get in my pickup truck and drive across country.. or on my 10 off I can drive my truck as far as i want, as long as im unhooked from my trailer..And As long as i go back on duty where I went off duty. tell me its all about safety, elogs or logbooks or hos.. I dont think so...
Against The Wind Thanks this. -
See what I mean? You can't put the onus on someone else. It's your truck and you have to make sure you operate it legally. If you screw up no one wants to hear about the shipper or how much you make. Believe me, I understand your reluctance to accept something new but you will either adapt or find a new career.

I understand what your saying im an o/o and I understand were going to have to adapt but if you believe for one second the goverment cares about safety your wrong, its all about revenue
-
Virgil--It's apples and oranges and you know it. I would fly 12 hours (with 3 pilots) and then could drive home or across the country like you. However, the difference is you do one on a commercial license (pilot or cdl) and the rest is on a personal license. Whether you like it or not there are restrictions on the commercial side. I'm not going to get into a big discussion here on the pro's or con's. I just wanted to point out that there are reasons (creative logging / ignoring the reg's) that the eLogs are coming your way.
-
Freight--I'm not a trucker (although I have enrolled in a CDL program through my local community college starting in Jan) and I have enjoyed reading these forums. I know you see the revenue side but I have to tell you that most airline safety procedures today have come from something learned in crashes. That is why airline flying is so safe these days. I also believe there are people who want the trucking industry to be safe also. One of the primary causes of accidents is fatigue--it took years for the FAA and NTSB to mandate duty hours to prevent this. I truly believe eLogs will accomplish the same thing. I will say this--if not for the government making it so the airline companies would have NO duty restrictions to this day.

Fatigue causes less than 2 percent of truck crashes!!! most are caused by other vehicles!! I Love trucking there is nothing I would rather do, I would rather drive a truck than go fishing.. Nothing to me is more relaxing than Driving.. Trucking is the only job I have ever done where there is never enough time in a day, any other Job I have ever had i could not wait for the day to be over.. not trucking though.. I would get tired of and want to park or go home but then i was ready to get back in the truck again...

Redwave, first off good luck in the cdl program! And if you read through some of the threads elogs dont necessarily make us safer drivers either, i cant remember what thread but somebody from prime had them and it made her drive when she was tired just because she it said she had the hours
-
Sorry Virgil but your stats are wrong. You need to check the NTSB's numbers for fatigue caused accidents in trucks and it is over 30% for the year 2010--so far. I know you love to drive just I loved to fly--but it still needs to be safe.
-
redwave you better stick to flying. i have done both, the fatigue truckers put up with is far worse than pilots deal with. most of the problem stems from shipper & reciver like freightlinerfever11 said. ya can't have some computer telling a live person when he is tired or not.
virgil tatro Thanks this.
