My company has a letter from the CSA stating that pretrip and post trip can be combined as long as the intent to keep damaged equipment off the road is fulfilled with a pretrip inspection.

The company's argument was that drivers finding damage in a post trip inspection would be spending their "10" getting repairs instead of obtaining much needed rest.

At the company I work for I don't have to log a certain amount of time for a pretrip. I actually do my pretrip before logging on to the electronic log. When I do sign on there is an electronic pretrip form I have to fill out.

I think legally it has to be 7 minutes minimum. ..but you cant do a full pre trip in 7 minutes. ...so its like a grey area there

Patty you know I agree with you almost 100% of the time but this I just don't. For a couple of reasons, not all jobs do you drive the same truck everyday. That's simple but the one that can get you in trouble is this. Say you shut down for the night and you find during your post inspection there's a major problem in the air lines. You go over to the shop and they tell you it'll be a few hours before they get to you. Ok, you call the boss and he or she tells you have a major problem at home and there's a cab waiting to take you to the air port. Another driving comes in and has no idea of the problem that's dangerous. I know you wouldn't do something like that and it sounds far fetched but that's why the regulations say a report must be generated at the completion of each day's work and signed off when problem is fixed.

To me the Pre-Trip is common sense and the Post Trip is a report telling the condition of the truck. I wouldn't want to go without either.
