I am sorry you feel that way. I stress that to HELP drivers save time which gives them money.
DOT is not your friend, they are out to make money on the drivers mistakes. Why would you help them?
They are not out to "make money" they are out there to make sure you are running legal and keep you and everyone else safe as possible.
Question to all: Do you mark your log book with 14 rules, 10 hr break start and stop, and 34 reset?
You should to help avoid driving over your 14, to make sure you take a "full" 10 hour break (many violations occure because the driver shortens their break by 15-30 minutes, which is a violation of the 11 & 14 usually and costly fine). The 11 hour marking is a little harder since it can change throughout your 14 hour period.
Just marking city and state will give you the same protection. It still proves the driver's location.
Yes it provides the location, however does not help you 3 months down the road with what did you actually do that day!
As you can see since I replied many state they do it for many GOOD reasons to do so! I guess some learn from others mistakes and some have to learn first hand. I don't mind which way a driver choses to learn, however I DO pass my knowledge down to drivers to help them AVOID fines, troulbe etc.

LogsRus, I have nothing against you. You give a lot of good info on this board.
Maybe it's the company you work for that wants you to baby sit drivers. The one I work for doesn't. All they check for is if the log is legal.
It's my job to manage my time. Every driver I know has his/her own way of time management. We all drive different.............
I have never heard of a company that has the logbook dept call and talk to the drivers. For the most part, the only people I talk to while on the road is my dispatcher and the payroll clerk.

I write down city, state, then what I was doing such as, load, unload, switch trailers, meal, breakdown, etc. I keep it very simple, but do note what I am doing. I do run legal, I have no reason not to especially since I do not run long hours.

Mark, I'm curious why you see a concerned company as "baby sitting" drivers?
True, some companies only check for legal logs, and that's fine. And I agree it's one of a Big truck driver's duties to manage time.
You've never heard of a company's logbook department calling and talking to the drivers.
Me neither.
But I think it could be beneficial for some drivers.

The MORE the front office knows about my likes and dislikes, my strong points and my weak points, my experience has been that that communication has brought about a better working relationship for all involved.
Win/Win.
I'd imagine a Big truck driver would hear from a logbook department more often if it was noticed that they seemed to be having problems with their logging.
But I sure wouldn't object to hearing from said department --- just to say HI, How's it going? --- even if I rarely erred on my logs.

Oh boy...here we go. If you want 3 different answers to the same question, ask 3 different DOT officers. My theory is this, note your Pretrip, Post Trip, Fuel and load/unload and that is it. Take a look at the Sample Log in your Motor Carrier Regulations book or on the back of your current log book...it doesn't even show remarks for PTI and Post TI, so one is to believe that remarks are NOT required by the DOT. MYSELF PERSONALLY,chooses to put the basic information to give anyone looking at my log book a general idea of what I did for that particular day.

Unfortunately that's what the log department "should" be doing. I have to babysit drivers to make sure they are running legal and doing the best they can on their log sheets. Many companies as you will see in the DOT regulations book when discussing this states "many" companies do ask drivers to put the information. I do this to "help" drivers quicker.

Yes it is your job! However many drivers have not been trained properly or their log department has not communicated to them on how to log properly and then I get them and show them how to do it right!

Maybe your log department isn't 1) checking the logs like they should be or 2) you have no violations so they don't contact you.
If you don't recieve a driver letter every month then it sounds to me they are not checking your logs and this may not be beneficial to you. What if you are doing something wrong and you have no clue, you will find out when DOT audits your logs and you get a fine. If your log department would have called you and told you this maybe you would not have gotten the fine.
Ask your log department how you are doing on your logs "curious" here if they are auditing your logs. Maybe you are just good on your logs.
I am not upset or mad either. I just want to explain myself of why I do it and why you should do it.
I pass down to drivers what I learn from other drivers and legal cases to help drivers from going through the same issues that's all.
Ok lets drop it, we both know the answer and you are 21 and free so you can log how you want. For those who take the advice your welcome.
Do let me know if your log department is auditing your logs (curious only, I don't know where you work and wouldn't turn anyone in). -
We all know the "answer" very clearly, we are now debating why to that's all!

My companies log dept does check our logs, I get a letter once a month. I have never received a violation for running over hours. In the last 2 years I have not received less then 90% on my log checks.
As for DOT, I have twice had state level DOT checks of my logbook at the scales. Both times, one DOT guy would enter my past 7 days into DDL, check my times using PC miler to get miles between my stops. The second guy would start asking question about what I did on such and such date and time. I would let him I don't recall, what does the logbook say. I have not received a ticket for log violations to date, knock on wood.
Do I fudge my books to make them look real good yes, at times, but I'm only talking about 15-30 minutes to clean things up. There is no need to run for 18+ hours with out sleep.
