I believe if they find a violation within the past 7 days then the DOT officer may in fact go back up to 30 days in the logbook to identify the beginning of the error. Example would be exceeding the 70 hour work week without having a valid 34 hour reset. The only way to pre-empt an officer from scrutinizing more than the past 7 days would be through the use of a loose leaf logbook and you systematically remove each page and have it sent to your home.
I believe the regs state you must have the last 7 days in your possession (or was it 8? hmm not sure now).

well lesson learned. from now on only 8 days in the book.

jlkklj777, You need to have the past 7 days, plus the current day for a total of 8 days. DOT/LEO may look at as many days as you give him. If you give them 30 back days, they may look at all of them. I find it best to use loose leaf and only keep the current plus 7 back in the binder, I file the other using DDL and trash the old pages.

Thanks for the clarification. I didnt feel like looking it up earlier and seeing I use the companies logbooks which are 31 days stapled together I always have enough days for Dot to look at.

I downloaded the DDL and will try it out. I gotta find out what Landstar's policy on Logbooks is. Hopefully the Loose Leaf will work....for years I have been dying to use them.

Why ask Landstar if they allow you to use loose leaf? Take their log book and take the stapples of the log book out and use a clip board (or don't put whole punches on the the actual log, only on the perferated area of the log, which all I think have). I never understood why drivers ask me if they can use lose leaf, when I am not on the truck to know if they are doing lose leaf or not? Get it?? Yes, I hope. No need to ask and there is no DOT regulation you can't use a lose leaf, that's why JJ keller sells lose leaf log books

Good point Logs, I often find that as long as you are turning in what needs to be turned in, the company often wont even question how you did the paperwork to get there. The trick is to hand in the correct paperwork at the correct time, and the office person processing it wont raise the red flag in your direction!

DDL is great for a driver!!!!! Especially those who don't like math or have ummm not so good handwritting. The log auditors love those logs that are printed
. At least mine does

Wow this website is being weird, it showed you posting a reply, however I had to "quote" to see your response. Anyhow
It should not have anything to do when you turn in your paper work: however turning in paper work 30 days at a time is VERY BAD AND very much a RED FLAG. What I am saying is there is nothing wrong with lose leaf and there is no need to ask anyone about it. Think about it, they are not on the truck with you & it is legal. Now what you might not do is punch wholes on the 'ACTUAL LOG SHEET" because it messes up many scanners and then causes problems. So put the whole punches (if you do that) before the perferatted area and no one in the office will know and if they do find out, ask them where it shows you "can't" do it! If they only would follow DOT regulations life would be more simple and help make you money
. Don't do lose leaf to run illegal though
