i've got a 10 year old toshiba laptop. i recently swapped drives. (platter) and it was like new again also.
and i'm pretty sure the feds can find anything they want. even if the hard drive has been formatted. encryption won't help you.

I will give you that for sure but...
The feds here have been trying to crack a laptop from a guy accused of Child Pr0n. He refused to give up the decryption key/password so they went to court to have a judge order him. Well that could be self incrimination and we are technically protected from that. It is working it's way through the court system right now.
They have been trying 2 months so far and can't crack it. The guy (IT guy) uses the same encryption I spoke about. It's rock solid and they cant crack it. All it takes is a 12+ digit pass phrase and encryption.
Now, is this ever REALLY needed? - I doubt it.
But I like knowing that whatever I put on the laptop (personal information or business information) stays private in case of theft. That is the only reason I suggested encryption on a laptop.
Now, if you have a tablet or laptop dedicated only to logging software and never use it for anything else - that changes the scenario.
However, if your secure with what you have or use - that's all that matters.
But as years past, more and more of our lives are on laptops/tables/smart phones and I think encrypting these devices is just good sense...at least it seems so. -
Drivers Daily Log on the iPad is awesome. No problems at all in the years I have been using it and the logs look great. I was even complemented by a Texas DPS trooper for the way my logs looked.
Best of all it is idiot proof. It tells you if you are in violation. I cannot even remember the HOS rules anymore because this thing does all the work for me. Just flag at each change of duty status and do the daily equipment inspection and thats it. I email my self the previous seven days each morning as a single pdf file so I do not have to print out the pages each day. I save each month's logs as a single pdf file and save it to my thumb drive.
Great product! -
i use big road on my smart phone get it at bigroad.com

but i figure from now on, Barney is going to be just as confused as me, so if there is a computer screen to look it, we both may breathe a bit easier

thanks diesel, i truly appreciate it
its amazing these idiots cannot leave well enough alone -
i use trucklogger. and just downloaded the new version. but haven't installed it yet.
apparently it has to go into settings and select hos2012. i think is what it said.
haven't decided to install over the current version or uninstall and reinstall the new version. gonjna play with it on the computer first before switching the laptop. -
However, in the decade and a half I have been using DDL, I have only been asked a dozen times or so if I CAN PRINT the logs and only been required ONCE to do so. -
