Just wondering if there are any O/Os here in the logging industry.. been driving for 13 years, just started up in the logging industry after moving to a logging town and I really have come to enjoy it. I’m working as a company log truck driver here at SP and I’m really thinking about after saving money for 5 or so years buying my own truck. Found out from talking to the logging company my company has me assigned to is that there is a shortage of log trucks to get the wood out, and they are building a new mill that can run 144 truck loads of logs a day. My question is has anyone converted a truck from 5th wheel to log and what are the costs?? Thanks!

It's costly. But I'm only familiar with Michigan log trucks.
Emgee Thanks this. -
5th wheel comes off, tailframe gets extended. Log bunk gets bolted on in place of 5th wheel. Bolt on a logging headache rack and buy a pole trailer. Then you gotta add in the digital scale system to the truck.
Don't cheap out on the specs. I'd be running 46k rears and full lockups.Oldironfan and Emgee Thank this. -

Start of with an old truck. If your lucky it may be double framed.

After you get a cost of a conversation check Idaho, Oregon, Washington. We've got a ton of them cheap and they're built for off road hauling. Just an idea.

thank you for the replies.. I’m in California so I’ll need a CA compliant truck... which with being CA compliant I need a low mileage truck because the emissions repairs are stupid on higher miles.. this isn’t going to be for 5 or so years, I’m bringing home after taxes about 4500 a month being a company driver so I’m fine for now, just would really like to own my own truck and create a business plan early

Why not just buy a used log truck? They’re on Truckpaper every day.

You're smart to wait five years. By then you'll have a better idea of what log hauling really is and whether you really want your own rig.
What mill are you based at?
Talk to some of the gypos. They can tell you what they have to do to stay in business. You might be surprised at how little money there is in hauling logs.
Good luck to you.Ruthless, BoxCarKidd, okiedokie and 1 other person Thank this. -
