Logging 101

    I'm looking for some basic fundamentals on logging.
    Is there anything that is on-line that covers this, so I can get a general idea.

    Might I suggest getting a logbook from a truckstop as you go over the info?

    There are DOT regulations and there are company regs. Fortunately, the DOT regs for OTR are federal and not state (THANK GOD!) but can differ between companies. Learn the Fed regs first. When you go to the company, they will tell you their regs (usually regarding logging fueling and tolls, detention time, or any thing else they may reimburse you for)

    If you have to log fueling, you have to be careful as to when to fuel. Fuel at the wrong time and you can blow a 34 hour restart, which will hurt your pockets.

    34 hour restart needs to be 34 hours off duty or in the sleeper with no time on duty.

    I had a backhaul one time from Beaver, UT, 10k in the box, didn't need the reefer so it can be done, most perishables I would be around wouldn't allow you taking a reset.

    Someone else would get the load. A procedure which an O/O could do would be to top off the reefer unit at the beginning of the reset, and have the 50 gallon tank on the reefer, that would run the 34 easily even on continuous. The smaller tanks might not make it that long, depending on the weather.

    I know that some of the companies require the driver to get up during the 10 hour break and monitor the temps several times. Seems to me that this is a violation of the 10 hour break as well.
