Older thread but still interesting. Can anyone tell me if there are more recent updates regarding this topic? I'm a newer driver and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how it all works.

I log what I do and for however long it takes. No special science to it.

I immediately go off duty as soon as I arrive at the shipper/receiver. I crawl at 5 or under, if I am really needing to preserve my clock whenever moving on customer property. Or, I log personal conveyance. Is my method legal according to FMCSA regulation? Nope. Could I be cited if I went through an inspection of my logs? Yep. For me, it's a calculated risk.

You have to be cognizant of wasted time.
I'm talking about uncompensated minutes each and every day that may have been driving time.
Our latest Peoplenet update no longer allows a back date on a drivers on duty time from the point of motion stop. It now will eat drive time for 5-6minutes in auto duty status change...
Meaning for me anyway I need to immediately hit on duty or yard move when stopped so I won't lose 5 or 6 minutes of pay each time I stop.
Which for me is $3.50 each time I don't remember to manually switch.
Many don't get compensated for on duty but why waste it if it can be used for drive time.scottied67 Thanks this. -
If you have the option for yard move instead of PC. It'd be legal.

Yard move is still on duty, no?

See, what I am talking about is staying off duty so that the time continues going toward resetting my 14.

One thing a driver can do is ask this question during a company meeting. If you do so be prepared to see at least half of the other drivers start making faces. You should get the official company position as well as some comments by other drivers on how they do it. The bottom line is to preserve that on-duty not driving time. I almost always just used 15 minutes, HOWEVER, I always used paper logs.
