that would depend on if doyle takes 35 or 55 pages to get to the interpretation of this incident and topic...how much time you got?![]()

i know that OUR company logs require a note for each van pulled even if the notation for that van is "nothing found".
I've never pulled the kingpinm but i have placed a quarter against the emergency gladhand so that the airbrakes wouldn't release. I wonder how long the guy spent looking for what was wrong when all it would take it unhooking the gladhand. -
Ok another way to look at the drop trailer thing. I can think of a couple of times when doing a good pretrip and checking everything over came in pretty handy.
1. Picked up a trailer headed to Chicago from Vermont. It was in Archibald Ohio. Sunday morning. I had been sitting since Friday in terminal for service work and wanted to get going. Hooked the trailer started doing my "walk around" and found 3 brake cans rusted through with the springs sticking out. (Have pictures somewhere). Called breakdown. Take it to nearest T/A. No 43,000 of paper rolls on it. Really need brakes that I will be sure will work. Sent someone out to fix. Also make sure repair is done properly. Guy was about to leave and when tested brakes had an air leak because new can was not seated properly. Now did the driver(s) before me pretrip/postrip? Not likely.
2. Preload at a paper mill with once again 40,000+ of paper rolls. I had been running all day and was suppose to be home in Des Moines but instead found myself in Virginia. Dispatch promised if I picked this load up they would find my load home for hometime. Yes I put in for hometime when I left out 3 weeks earlier. I had about 45 min. left in my day and got to cons. It is about 9pm. Hooked trailer and did my "walk around". Now I carry a small mag light that is holstered on my belt for this type of situation. As I look under the trailer something doesn't look right. I walked around back looking through the ICC bumper. The rear air tank is hanging by one hanger and the other is really rusty.Breakdowns answer was take it to the nearest T/A. Sure and have the tank under pressure break the other mount loose and send it screamin through someones windshield.
So how many drivers do you think pulled this trailer without really looking at it?
Sorry for being so windy, just wanted to get in on the fun. -
However, I don't make a DVIR for them anymore unless I'm in canada (i make a paper inspection book out when im in canada, canadians dont like paperless DVIR...)...it's because I disagree with the way werner handles DVIRs. But the DOT is totally unitnerested in looking at my log books, even posted a while back where i had a level 3 where they didnt look at my log book....
The reason i dont fill one out with werners system is because werner automatically logs you a 15 minute pretrip at the beginning of the day, doesnt give you a way to fill out a DVIR at that point. You send a macro at the end of the day, macro 46, to log a DVIR and submit your log. It does not log a post trip when you send this message. totally backasswards. So, when i send that message, i only fill it in for the tractor and trailer that i have when i send it....i cant do an inspection on a trailer that is not in my posession, and clearly this message is for a post trip, not a pretrip. simple as that. Werner has never given me any trouble for doing it this way, and if they do, I am fully prepared to give an hours long rant to any safety guy! They did however give me dozens of written warnings for forgetting to send that message LOL. -

I wish that you'd read the regulations and then we could discuss your interpretation instead of blurting out what you've been told or seen.
If you pick up another trailer what you do is a pre-trip. You don't have to fill another form out but you must show it. You also do not need to crawl under the trailer. But you do need to satistify yourself that certain parts work and so far if I was your employer you'd have to show me what you do. And as you agree you do need to fill out the post-trip.
You also have to realize that here on this group there are alot of people that are new and look for advice. Most of us like to give them what is required by law so they will not get jammed up later on.
I would like to know how you see if your brakes are working properly so please tell us how you do that safety check. If you would please. -
I've read the regulations. I know what they say.
A pre-trip on the trailer is part of hooking the trailer up. It's not a seperate process. -

Ok Rick G I'll try to help out here. 1. Learn the difference between a Pre-trip Inspection and a Post Trip Inspection. FMCSA 396.13 reads that a driver shall satisfy himself the vehicle is in safe operating condition b4 driving. Check the previous inspection and satisfy himself and items noted on the previous report are fixed. FMCSA 396.11 reads " At the end of the day the driver shall fill out a written DVIR and sign it. Took some liberties here as I don't know how to transfer the regs to the forum. Basically it boils down to this: You must satisfy yourself the vehicle is safe before you drive it (Pretrip) At the end of the day you fill out the Post Trip Inspection and sign it( Post Trip). You must inspect a trailer before you move it and inspect it when you drop it. It's just common sense. Companies I worked for let you show 15 min for a pretrip and 15 minutes for the post trip or you could combine fueling and a post trip inspection at the end of the day and show 30 mins. Point is the post trip is the one that specifies lights, brakes, wipers, tires, and that's the one you sign. I never filled out the inspection report until the end of the day though I did do a walk a round before driving after my rest period usually, in the AM. Guess I've probably confused everyone here but the post trip inspection is the one in the FMCSA regs that specifies what you must inspect.
GasHauler, mizdageeragn and RickG Thank this.
