I started at 23 yrs old also....
First thing is first...... Get experience to the point where you are comfortable driving the truck"ANYWHERE " and" Back" into any dock
.. And then take a job at one of the LTL companies or something local.... OTR is not a good fit for all drivers but it is where we get our learning experience from before getting into some hairy city driving and having accidents or messing your license up ( don't have a single beer and drive)
.... It gets easier with time and experience

Believe it or not the cell phone has made this much easier. That allows for at least one person that your talk to daily. That allows for them, and you, to know that you are safe and sound. It gives you the chance to stay grounded with someone at the house. You may decide that this lifestyle is not for you, that is okay as well. Or, it may not be for you now. If you are hunting for a wife and then want to have kids, I would encourage you to find a local driving job until the kids are up and out of the house. Who knows, maybe the wife will team or at least go with you when you drive OTR. As with all things in life, follow your heart.

Get experience for a year and go work local. Seriously, all the money in the world are not gonna give you your 20's back.

Yeah, I know, you can tell the lonely ones easily enough. They're shooting the breeze with the cute cashier with 7 people in line behind them.

She doesn't even have to be cute. A pulse is optional too, LOL.

I am beginning to think that I must be doing something wrong. I make the money that I want to make. I drive what I want to drive. I go where I want to go. I pull the loads that I want to pull. I meet good hands and we meet good people at the local watering holes.

I guess if you want friends, you have to be a friend.

Just like some people are right-handed and some are left-handed, some people NEED to be around people and others need time AWAY from people. If you are one type of person you can make small adjustments to be more comfortable in the situation, but you aren't going to change from one type to another type.

One very good compromise for me was carrying a pet with me in the truck. Unlike a co-driver they don't have strong opinions or preferences so you drive like you want but you have a companion to avoid getting lonely or depressed. However, only 10-25% of companies may even allow a pet for company drivers.

If you need lots of social connection use your cellphone and stay connected with your friends or family, just don't whine about your job to them. They don't want to hear it and you shouldn't focus on the hard parts anyway.
