Is there a union for long haul truckers? The son has been driving for Steven's for about 2 years and often complains about having to sit around waiting to be loaded. Usually at a slaughterhouse. He often sits for many hours waiting. The pay for being idle is pretty much peanuts. He says legislation is needed.
Any one else experience this problem?

I too, once believed truckers would organize. Heck i once sat out a day as a strike. It must of been sucessful. There was 2 of us at the Warfield TS in Midland multiply that by hundreads of truckstops and there were possibly Dozens of striking drivers across the country......o_O
Most truckers can go 2 weeks without a paycheck, so tails go between the legs and nothing changes

If he doesn’t have patience trucking will beat it into him
    Hurry up and wait
Broke down, send money are 2 phrases he needs to get use to
Also there are other trucking companies out there that either pay decent amount for detention or mainly drop and hooks with little waiting

As much as we have all tried to fight it. Sitting around is part od the job. Its the source of most truckers frustrations. Switching out of door slamming will cut down on sitting around time but doesnt eliminate it all together... Dont know of any otr union companies.. about the only union companies left are ltl and linehaul companies

If he starts the Union Talk, he'll be fired and have a real problem finding another company to hire him.

Stevens has had this reputation since I started trucking in 1990s. "Nice trucks, no miles". Unions are voted in company by company, so no, there is no long haul truckers union. The employees at A company can vote in union representation, but that will only affect the employees at the one company that brings in a union.

Truck driving has FAR TOO MANY trucking companies and too many drivers. So companies and drivers have zero "muscle" to force customers to do anything. Unions don't really fix problems, they just shift the cost of those problems to companies and customers who often choose not to use union vendors.

That's pretty common when you pull reefers.

That name brings back some memories.
