I remember the one in Grosse Tete, LA that had a live tiger on the premises.

I worked the slaughterhouses in KS and Texas for two years. The two places in Texas were drop and hook as long as loading went smoothly..negative ecoli tests etc.

Dodge City and Liberal, KS was National beef and had to drop trailer and leave the property until they called me to come pick it up.

Most always got $100 for detention and layover if the wait was unreasonable. Bunch of chicken places all over were pretty much the same.

Seriously once he has a solid 2 years he can go work for just about anyone. Unless of course he’s racked up tickets, accidents etc.

Sounds like he’s grown unhappy with his current gig so maybe it’s time to turn the page.

Could easily be making 6 figures and not sitting around..Walmart comes to mind.

Look, I got nothing but nice things to say about Stevens however they are basically just a starter company.

Yup, let's go with trickle-up economics.

The more you pay the people that transport the goods, the more everyone pays for those goods.
Just like tariffs and minimum wage increases, the end consumer pays for it all and there is no net gain for anyone - except for those at the top.

Yup.....they call it trucking. Your son is going to have to learn to like the taste of ####, because every driver eats his/her fair share. Here's the reality: lots of orders go out daily, to meet nationwide, and at times worldwide demand for these products and oftentimes there isn't enough staff at a lot of these shippers and receivers to minimize delays. Now....delays like this will sting a lot less if he learns to utilize his clock properly. I use delays as rest periods. Sometimes I'll stay at shippers for 10 hrs. Other times, its in smaller increments, called the split sleeper. OTR drivers must make every minute mean something. Relying on legislation to make trucking easier is wishful thinking at best.

I've actually came across some very happy Stevens drivers, and they were getting miles..sometimes I'm inclined to think some of these drivers are running their miles incorrectly. Every company has ambassadors and complainers though.

I got paid for all waiting/loading/unloading for 47 years…just because a company offers you a job, don’t jump on it until details of compensation/benefits/holidays is outlined before signing on. Companies have been begging for drivers for over 40 years!

There is a union...the Teamsters, but I don't know of any OTR companies that are unionized any longer. The Teamsters mostly represent LTL companies and construction companies (heavy highway, paving, etc...). I worked for a union OTR company in the 90's and still had to wait around from time to time, but overall had a very good pay package. I made 50k in 1995 and our health insurance premium was 100% paid by the company.

there are unions for drivers that run regional, i know, cuz i worked for one..it was an LTL company, so all the drivers, local (city p&d), line haul (nights) and modified line haul (out more than 1 night).

otherwise just for long haul itself...NOPE

if he complains about his current job, then suggest he try and get on with, UPS, USPS, New Penn, for a union job.

others like FedEx, SAIA, A.Duie Pyle, are not union, but A.Duie Pyle is far superior in this line up of companies.
