Charge $1 per axle is the old rule of thumb.

I think you got a hungry trucker that doesn't have a clue. Im booked out over a week ahead right now on freight that pays nearly that after my carrier takes 25%. If I'm getting right at 2k on legal 1 day flat bed loads i think its ridiculous for an rgn with his own authority to be getting 2k on almost the same miles.

To be clear, I'm not saying you scammed him, im saying he is an idiot for agreeing to such a low rate.

I was not saying it was unreasonable - without the benefit of tone in your message it sounded like you were getting at the price being extra ordinary. And if the load was over 12’ wide a pilot car would eat all the goodness out of that rate .

I was more getting my at people who look at the gross rate and think wow - without knowing the underlying costs in time permits pilots and equipment. Yes, this includes brokers - maybe especially brokers - who think wow I offered $5/mile for that load - when the permits and pilots cost nearly $5/mile and it takes 3000-500k in equipment investment to be able to legally mover the load.

Yes, I am referring to a Landstar broker offering a 100,000 lbs D11 chassis from MD to CA for $4.93 per mile all in

Sure, I hear ya. A bit of context- that was back in December. I'd expect it to be tighter now.

Sadly - he is not unique. So many brokers trying to move loads that they don’t understand. Then when you kindly explain some of the requirements necessary to move a particular load their eyes glaze over and all you have done is give a free HH tutorial.

And when you get that broker together with the guys that sees the “big” gross number and takes it on non legal equipment without the proper permits or escorts - the “market” has been set

Yeah, I suppose that's fair. I get trying to save your customers money, but I can't imagine any of you guys are inclined to give service away for roughly half of what it's worth.

I think its unreasonable for a guy that knows what he is doing. There is no logic to guys running specialized expensive equipment and heavy weights under their own numbers for basically just a tad more than im getting leased to a carrier pulling easy every day flatbed freight.
