I use to keep my gas can on a mount under my fairing and DOT never said a word during level 1 insp. They can't really say anything its under 1000 lbs so no hazmat required
Thats a nice set up. Ive been thinking about doing that or a roof mounted A/C for a rv. How long have you had that mounted like that? I worry bout the vibrations thats the only thing that has me considering the roof ac
Roof mount A/C's are made to run off generators, they have easy start compressors and are built for the vibration.
I hear ya. Mine is pretty quite and I usually try to park off by my self cause I don't like to listen to others idea all night when its 60 outside like the a%^*&%es that parked on both side of me last night
My truck is air ride and little or no vibration. A/C units are very rugged to begin with like a car A/C unit. Not like the old days. If A/C units were that fragile they wouldn't make the trip in a dry van to the stores on a Walmart truck!! lol It's pretty much a throw away if something goes wrong. $400 for a new one and just slide it in as opposed to a roof mounted one. Pain in the butt to replace. Been there and done it.
That was kind my thought also if it does take a crap just get a new one. Its a little different riding in a van a few time compared to riding mounted on the back of a truck for 100,000 miles is why I asked. I'm more worried about the back of the sleeper starting to crack more than the ac. Did you do any kind of reinforcement to the area where you cut the hole?
I also like that you can get them with the heat strip also so I can get read of my little ceramic heater (don't use it much anyways)
My truck is a Western Star and the walls are about 2" think with metal on the inside and outside with a honeycomb material in between. It's the same way the floor of the truck is made also. Very very strong. I think the floor would have failed long ago if strength were an issue. I have a company making a custom cover at the moment for the unit. I'm going to try just putting bungee cords around the cover. If that doesn't keep the road crap out I'll glue Velcro around all the edges. I could use Gorilla tape too as a last resort. On a side note. I used Gorilla tape for the first time to tape a plastic bag over the hole in the back of my truck while I was waiting for the brackets to be made. It took an act of God to get that tape off. HOLLY CRAPOLA!!!!! Forget duct tape!!! The only problem I have with my Rigmaster and the rooftop A/C unit is the air flow. They may be 20,000 btu's but it doesn't do much good if they can't blow. I think it may be due to saving space and scrimping on the fan. It was over 80 in the cab yesterday sitting in the yard and I cranked it up for a bit with a temperature gauge and it was blowing like a mad man at 38 degrees.
My next truck will have an APU, or a home moade hybrid. What I'd really like is the roof top and the ability to plug it into 110. That's available to me lots of times that I actually use my sleeper. I wonder if you guys know if there is a small, quiet diesel generator that would be enough to run a roof top or even the window unit modification?? I just can't stand the noise of most of them. I wouldn't be opposed to spending the money on something like a Tri-Pac, Rig Master, Pony Pac, etc., BUT most folks I've talked to say they can't keep up in the 100+ degree heat. If it can't do that, then there's no point in my getting one. WHen I do run OTR, I generally sleep during the day, and I DON'T want to be hot. I like it C-C-C-C-COOOOOOOLD!!! A buddy of mine told, "Just cut the crap. Nothing is going to cool enough for you. Just go ahead and hang a reefer on the back of your sleeper." I'm sure that'd draw some looks on the road!
