You don't need one that is verse in trucking, you need one that is willing to learn the industry. They have resources they can tap to get their questions answered by other accountants.

Might be considered expensive, I'm not sure, but if you don't mind supporting the KR enterprise, I've been satisfied:

Trucking is a business. There are only a very few things that are different as it pertains to trucks. A good preparer, or preferably a CPA, that has a high level of business customers usually can do well with a trucking operation. Many other businesses write off fuel, equipment, parts/tools/maintenance, business related travel/motels, supplies, have allowances for fuel tax writeoffs for non road use equipment, etc, so there is nothing really all that rocket science about trucking tax filing. Daily meal allowance is the only major difference.
Where the problems seem to show up is when folks use the average H&R Block type of tax preparer that does mostly 1040EZ returns. You are running a business, so act like it. Use a professional that does business taxes.
I send monthly spread sheet results to my local CPA as they are completed for the previous month. She remains current on everything, can recommend estimated taxes I need to pay throughout the year, and when tax filing comes around, it is a simple deal. She even does my payroll tax filing monthly for me (I am a LLC with a S Corp tax structure, so I am an "employee" of my 1 truck business. There are tax advantages for me to do this that get complicated for this discussion). For everything she does for me in a year, I get a bill every couple of months for about $75, with the annual tax returns (both business and personal since I am a Corp) for about $125. She did my LLC and S Corp setup for $150. There are distinct advantages to having a CPA that you use all the time, understands business, and can advise you as you go along. Doesn't matter if you are a sole proprietor with one truck or Donald Trump. The cost vs benefit is well worth it.
I am pretty fortunate. My CPA has her own accounting firm, is married to a trucking business owner, and does their accounting and taxes and a LOT of agriculture, construction, and other similar business entities as well. This gal KNOWS business taxes. I have saved thousands more each year is taxes since I started using her a few years ago. For every dollar I have paid her to manage my taxes, set up my LLC/S Corp structure, etc, I have probably saved $10 or more in taxes paid. Put a crowbar in you wallet and pay for the services of someone who knows what they are doing. You will be much happier, less stressed, and money ahead.
Anyone want to see if she can do a good job for you, give her a call. Her fees are very reasonable, she can do things via mail or email, etc. She is in Newton, Iowa (easy access for anyone that runs I-80 thru Iowa frequently) and not some home business kind of thing. She has an office at the city square close to the county courthouse, surrounded by Lawyer offices, and has staff. One could drop a trailer at Walmart and bobtail to a parking area near her office if they needed to. Newton isn't stupid about trucks. The street to her office is truck route designated and U.S. Hwy 6. http://dimensionsacctg.comLast edited: Mar 4, 2017
Triple Digit and bbechtel16 Thank this. -
Mine is in CA as well, but she mostly works remotely http://bqbookkeeping.com and she is an Enrolled Agent (similar to a CPA). Not sure if she takes new clients though, as she seems to be always busy during tax season.
