When I was going through the process of getting my CDL I actually went to truck school just over the weekends. I didn't go full time I kept my jobs at the time and went to truck school on the weekend. My mom said to me "I'd keep you're job and just go to truck school on the weekend, who knows you may not like it."

It's worked out, but it was good advice from her and I'm glad I just went on the weekend and went to regular work during the Monday-Friday work week which wasn't bad.

I agree liking a particular truck is one thing, but working day one for an employer and customers is a totally different story and the truck you drive like someone said above doesn't have a whole lot to do with job satisfaction. Like where I work we really don't talk very much about the equipment a lot per-say were more concerned with routing, load quality and making sure our deliveries are accurate and on time.

Hauling freight for paying customers or clients is a much bigger ball game, what you really want to look for is pay, benefits, job satisfaction do you like the job? Do you like the work? What appeals to you?

I'm more of a dry van/ refrigerated/ LTL guy I know a lot of people don't like that kind of work, but it appeals to me, but anything dry van, refer or LTL that's usually consumer goods freight or supply chain stuff that is always a big race against the clock. I work for a food distributor in the delivery division we supply many different types of customers and our routes have to leave early and roll as quickly and safely to keep our customers supplied so they can keep there supply lines and supply chains open so they can keep operating.

Another question you need to ask is how much money do you want to make? Maybe down the line you meet someone and want to get married if you're not already and you're priorities shift it's how it goes.

@HammerSlammer check out LTL trucking companies in your area. you will start as a dock member and eventually you can move up to drive the mule. After some time the company will sponsor your cdl. Check out Old Dominion, Estes, SAIA. You can make great money with those companies. After you gain experience you can eventually go buy your with peterbilt.

    Good luck

    Forgot to add.

Tools: minimum is to have a hammer, vice grips, and an adjustable wrench. These will fix pretty much any problem you have that can be fixed by someone who isn't a mechanic.
