$9000 is ridiculous. Plenty of companies out there will train you for a reasonable price. Don't give in to this highway robbery! Do a search here in the forum about companies that will train in return for time served. There is no shortage of threads on the subject...

    PusheR Thanks this.

Don't take the word of the school placement office as to what trucking companies will and will not accept. There are plenty of posts on here of upset students that were told the wrong info. Call as many trucking companies as you can and be honest and ask if you qualify. Then apply to the ones that interest you.

BTW. A grant isn't free money, it's our tax money and $9,000 is absolutey criminal. Schools can only teach you how to pass the test, they can't teach how to drive a truck, only experience can do that.

Most companies aren't going to hire you if you do not go through a mill. Insurance companies have pretty much made it a mandatory thing. You may be able to find an owner operator that will take you on. If you don't have the funds though you may want to consider company schooling. Good luck to you.

You could buy a good used tractor for 9 grand, learn to drive it, get your CDL with it, and lease it on with someone.

another thread has me attempting to contact swift since it is one of the many that hire outta this school ..apparently the Tennessee (swift training center number i found for east coast coverage) does NoT take on 'students' out of NY but they DO however have an outside 'school' (sigh.. see my 'need advice' thread) they are affiliated with and have a swift recruiter permanently assigned to/at.
At most posters urging I am trying to increase my job hunting pool availability by attempting to avoid the 9,000 cost of attending this outside school (NTTS) located less than a mile from my home by applying and calling carriers using the internet/phone.
I am calling this swift recruiter now but i sense a scheme/plan that NTTS has perhaps made some sort of deal with Swift that .. i dunno.. all hires outta NY go thru NTTS? man.
to clarify i came home today from NTTS with a swift prehire application and a couple others prior to signing on to NTTS next class beginning Nov 22.
this site got me a bit sidetracked as i followed OTGs exploits and so i immediately googled Swift and called them. at no time during my conversation did I mention NTTS but upon giving my residence was informed at this time NO training hires out of New York State are being taken at the Tennessee facility. the operator then proceeded to say that they do however have affiliations with a school in that area that they Are hiring out of and long story short i got the local recruiters Fone number.. callin her now.

lol frdr (hey my pre cdl days handle on the radio was 4-door cuz all my 4wheelers seemed to end up bein four doored models) . ha. yeah but i cant get that tax payer grant or the great low rate low payment stafford loan to buy my own either and i definitely do want instruction. jumpin from a B for years into an A i suspect will be at least a little bit of an off-feeling transition. I used to fantasize/dream/hope about meetin up with an o/o and learning thru them too but seriously as far as funds go I am literally tapped. a school of this type is truly my last ditch option. of course, as most suspect there are alot of unmentioned details such as crappy work history/credit and criminal history (mostly 5-10 or more yrs ago..nothing ever to do with women/kids or drugs.. jus really dumb crap but there nonetheless.. done. sentenced. paid. time served. and moved/movin on). i have mentioned bits n pieces of most of that here and there because of course it effects my questions and how the answers apply, but I am really tryin not to get a thread bogged down with a whole lot of embarrassing details..
perhaps in my case the forum wont be of much help or isnt the proper place.. there are private messaging features but yeah.. just randomly msg ppl? lol.. i dunno.
i drove alot of miles in many states across the NE region and Driving is something i found i was able to do really good and safely and quite naturally..ie: only dang thing i seemed to ever be actually good at lol. not only that.. i really enjoyed it and miss it alot. 37. single. no kids. no pets. no ties. never had em n pretty sure i dont want em.
i can start at the bottom of the very bottom.. just hopin i dont hafta.. nuff said for now.

    -edit/update
Spoke with Nancy Perkins.. the Swift recruiter for my area and in a very non rushed attitude talked with me for about 30 minutes while i broke nearly every detail down and basically she claims to have seen many a similar situated app come thru swifts doors to a successful end and agrees that before starting with NTTS i should get a Pre-Hire FirsT. She also said NTTS will help me to do that as well.
So yeah.. i dint sign up for NTTS today.. if Swift approves after their "investigation" process then perhaps on the 22nd of this month i will sign on to NTTS.. if they dont.. well.. i am goin to turn in the app to her now and then will be back to call other carriers too.
thanx so much everyone for your comments thoughts and advice. I probly woulda started the school today had i not stopped in here to poke around and read. wish i had found it sooner.

9G'S seems outrageous. There are community colleges that offer training too..you might want to check it out. Or just go with a company and get training through them

LTL is kinda lean right now but, most of them have programs for you to get your cdl while working the dock. Plus your home everyday

Recruiters are going to "claim" all sorts of stuff. Don't believe them! One big thing to consider about driving for the mega-carriers is your dispatcher. Your dispatcher is going to be your key to making money in this gig. The DM's at these super-carriers are usually responsible for over a hundred drivers. This makes you a number in a stack of numbers trying to make money. Are you picking up what I'm puttin down?
