Ok fellas I haven't played with cb/10-11 meter radios in about 15 yrs. but I am getting ready to do some Christmas shopping. My father is a disabled, legally blind (very limited sight), but darn near lives on his cb. I'm far from having tons of $$ but this is my fathers only outlet. So all that being said I'm looking for gift ideas... He currently talking on a Galaxy base station (Saturn maybe???), its been tweaked for some SSB and power output w/ silver eagle desktop mic. He has a 35-40 ft tower with a set of beams (with rotor of course). What would your recommendations be gifts to give my old man a smile this Christmas (keep it clean plz lol)?

btw if any of you are ever In the sw Michigan, nw Indiana area give "sandman" a shout.

    thank you everyone

Well... assuming he doesn't already have one you might consider gifting him a small base amplifier. Normally I would recommend a tube-type amp because they sound better but for someone visually impaired a solid-state model would be a better choice because they require no tuning.

If you are on a budget you can pick up a medium-sized mobile amplifier for not much money and set it up on an indoor power supply.

really, the only thing i could think of would be a pill amplifier. tube would soud better but because of his eyesite this may not be the way to go because you need to tune in avtube amp from time to time. if money is tight then the best way to go would be a 200 to 300 watt amp and a 30 amp power supply. this is strictly a turn it on and forget it setup and will help loads in his ability to reach out to those far off stations. a good power supply should run you around 150 and a good texas star 250 or 350 will come in from 200 to 350 bucks.

now, another idea would be a rci 2995. this is one of if not the best base radios going right. super clean, works outstanding on ssb and will do 150 all day long but they are around $550. in the end it just depends on how much you want to spend. you could save some money and look on ebay.

If he enjoys CB, he may be interested in ham radio. "Skip" is fun now, but it'll be gone soon. Ham radio has multiple bands, and one is always open to somewhere in the world.

Get in contact with a local club. Simply do a web search on "ham radio club" along with the town name. That should net you at least an email address or phone number for a local contact, and they should be able to help point you in the right direction.

Also, Handi-Hams is a national organization for ham radio operators with disabilities. www.handiham.org
