If the economy would ever take off and we'd get back to a 4.5+ % growth rate like back in the "good old days", there might indeed be a true driver shortage. But with the economy being anemic like it is with no positive signs on the horizon, I don't see any loads not getting delivered on time (due to too few drivers) any time soon.

When you see the turnover rate, you should consider that those numbers include those moving from one carrier to another rather than all of them leaving the industry. The economy is still sluggish. Historically, when there have been shortages, you see prices rise considerably. I have not seen that in the trucking industry. Rates are not rising significantly and neither has driver pay. If we suddenly had an economic boom and saw growth rates near 10%, then we might also see an accompanying driver shortage along with a shortage of workers in other fields. I don't see that happening with the current political climate.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I really appreciate it. If anyone could give me a rough estimate on what new drivers usually make a week during training and after going solo I'd really appreciate it. I was just wondering what I should be expecting to make. I am going to try with Averitt but I am also open to other companies. The reasons I like Averitt are all the trucks have APU's and they have a terminal about 45 minutes from my house. Also I like the idea that Averitt gives you uniforms to wear. But like I said, I am new to trucking and still just looking for advice.. Thanks again guys for all of your help, this is a great resource and I really appreciate it. Also, I am overweight (about 390lbs) but I am 6'6. Will this hinder me for driving? My, sugar and BP are normal though.
