If hometime is a concern then I would stop right there in your pursuit of a driving career, especially living in Florida. You are going to spend a lot of time and money to pursue this and be made lots of promises by recruiters only to find out once that steering wheel is in your hands that the hometime they promised you just isn't going to happen. If you are serious about driving then go for it. Just don't plan on all that hometime they promised you. I have been driving 16 years and live in Fl. Hell it was tough getting home and I owned my own trucks!

I realize athat I will be spending alot of time on the road. I've been looking into the companies that sponsor but have only been able to find 2 so far, CRST and FFE. I want to go with CRST as bad as a hooker wants HIV. FFE has a terminal in Miami but isn't hiring out of Florida due to inability to provide hometime, the fact that the recruiter was honest about this impressed me.

Besides CRST and FFE does anyone else now of company sponsored training?

Also my father-in-law has offered to teach me how to drive himself, allowing me to get my CDL without school. Wouldn't doing this make it hard for me to find work with established companies ?

If you get your CDL without school, I won't say you can't find work but it will be nearly impossible. If you will search the forum you will find many that have tried this and most give up and go to school. Some even have several years of local experience.

Look into the floral companies like Armellini and Windy Hill. Both based out of FL. Armellini is team driving but you can make top pay! Armellini usually has a 5-7 day turn around. Yes you come back home but sometimes usually for a few hours or so. Another good option for you in FL would be Knight. They have a terminal in Lakeland and have a newbie program called Squire. Like I said, look into the floral companies that will be your best bet for getting home a little more often in FL. Don't fall for the mega-carriers telling you home on weekends. Their version of home on the weekends is Sunday noon to 3pm! Also keep in mind it isn't going to be worth your time if you don't drive full time and run 48. Just for example say you go out for 12 days and the freight is slow or you break down. The only way to make that up is to drive for 2-3 weeks straight. Probably doesn't make a lot of sense to you now but once you get into the world you will realize what we are talking about. The trucking world just doesn't work like you think. You don't just drive endlessly and make money. Especially as a single driver! There is a lot of bull#### involved like waiting all day to get loaded and unloaded, waiting to get a load, sitting around for a day or two getting your truck serviced blah, blah, blah. You really have to hustle to make it happen. Generally this is why it takes most drivers a good year or so before they make money. There are some very few exceptions like "American Trucker" and others on this forum. They came into this career with a really good grasp on the concept and really know how to hustle.

Really good advice from BigJohn! Don't waste your time trying to get your CDL on your own. I would say 99% of the companies out there require accredited schooling and some only take drivers from certain schools. This is due to their insurance. Bite the bullet and go to school whether it be through a company or private school or community college. There are grants out there that can help. Just make absolutely sure this is for you before spending $6000! If hometime is at all a concern please reconsider. It's the number one reason drivers quit. You will find 4-6 weeks out is the norm and that is what it is going to take to make any kind of money out there.
