1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

    How do they work that?

I contract driving to them as a service? Done a lot on 1099, but it seems like I wouldn't have much to deduct.

Thanks to everyone for helpful and sometimes funny answers.

They operate just as if you're a company driver except pay on 1099.
Some of those companies are real loose about hiring practices.

The only thing that shows me and my other gasoline drivers is years experience and the record that came from that. I am used to drivers having over 20 years in the city with oversized truck and trailers. Someone that comes right out of school and is ####y does not need to be in a top position. I'm not saying you're ####y but you do have a way with words that might rub someone the wrong way.

I've seen plenty of drivers that have been driving most of their adult life and can't drive let alone show someone else. Those are the people that come out of school and just beat the truck to death and drive with no defensive skills or skills at all. As long as they are far away from me and do not hurt someone else let them have their low paying job.

I did my research and set down some obtainable goals and kept to them. I did alright with early retirement and a spotless record. I was at top pay and could only match the pay scale at other companies. I'm only trying to show you that if you come into this business with a good attitude and the knowledge that you will NEVER stop learning ( by doing it and learning from a book) you might be ok. It's keep your mouth shut and your eyes open and only make negative comments about someone else when you can prove your skills.

Learning by doing it would be my final step. If we were to go down a good grade loaded up I would want you to know how the brake system works and then show me from the book. You can not just jump in the truck and go down a grade with no knowledge on what to do. There are a lot of items you need the book to understand and know the system inside and out. Granted I have in my 20 plus years seen a lot of college people get the salary job and have responsibility of the truck I'm driving. When you have to explain what a compartment is you better be warned. Good luck to you and use the book along with doing a task when needed.

    kiwi23 and speedyk Thank this.
