what ever you do, don't lease it into another company nor sign a lease purchase agreement, period.
in my case ,I got my CDL permit, my O/O friends let me practice with their trucks for about 3 months, then I opened my own business, (my own DOT .MC) i bought my own used truck with cash. I hauled loads locally, power only, for another company for about 10 months or so, then I bought my own new reefer. I dispatch myself , I do my ifta, I do all my company documents , except my taxes.
I am against monopoly, oligopoly, and oligarchs trying to take over this industry , therefore I am 1 truck/reefer man.
    I run if I get paid my rate. I'm 100% independent O/O.
every business is risky. listen to real 100% independent O/O. if you are smart and disciplined you will enjoy your freedom, but if you think you are going to become rich in this industry, you are in the wrong business. the only way you can make a lots of money in this industry is abusing and exploiting other fellow drivers, just like those big companies and corporations.

This is exactly what i want to do. I've done nothing but make other people rich my whole life, now I want a bigger piece of the pie.

I'm not trying to become a millionaire, i just want to live free under my own terms and make enough for a comfortable retirement because lord knows social security won't be there when I'm eligible. Thanks for the reply.

why you volunteered to abused and exploited? don't you learn watching others? or you think you are special? because people like you, rates are just like the rates in a third world countries.

Most important thing is where you gonna get your good loads from?
Without that the rest is pointless especially in a horrible freight market.

Are the load boards no good? I haven't had to find my own loads yet so that's something I'll have to consider.

You need to be thinking get rich. Otherwise you’ll probably just get by. If you’re serious about this in the long term just get a new truck.

I've been an owner operator for over 10 years, am on the loads boards every day.

The market is currently the worst I have ever experienced in my entire career.
Ask anyone on here how the market is doing and they'll tell you.

I've even posted threads showing how there are public traded trucking companies who reported in their earnings they are operating at a loss.

Things have been soo bad this year Swift has been walking away from their customers and putting more of their own trucks in the spot market. A mega carrier contract freight is not even safe from devastation.

    I'll post that below

    Be careful.

Now is a good time to buy used and new.
Trucks are on the dealers lots, ready. The freight market can only get better but the equipment prices and also availability not much really.
Just make sure you don't buy a truck and then ask "what now?", because you're not getting help there from anyone.

One can't thwart someones ambition, why, reminds me of a younger me, but that was 30 years ago. You can almost spot a failure coming, when someone is more concerned with the truck and financing than what they are going to haul. Getting a truck is the easy part. If I had that kind of money, I'd find a company that wants new trucks, like reefer, put half down on a new truck, and go from there. I say KW for resale, but used trucks, like used cars today, is the biggest ripoff, next to the food store. A new truck shows you mean business, but to who? Some say the O/O failure rate is 90% ! Sounds a bit much, but in an iffy economy that will start the process, insurance will surely finish most off. I think there will be a time in the future when companies will no longer be able to comply with regulations, and the rootin' tootin' owner operator will once again grace our highways with bootleg loads, but gonna be a while.
