I live in Tallahassee FL , and I have two axle straight dump [Ford F-700] with a knuckleboom loader; GMVW 25,000, which, after being stopped and ticketed for being overweight, and no CDL, I have re-tagged to carry 35,000. I cannot use this truck to test with because it's not a CDL truck, being under 26,000 GMVW. I don't know what I can use to test with. They've made it impossible unless you know someone who will let you use their truck to test in, and a licensed CDL driver to drive it to the test and back.
I have driven a 26,000 truck for 30 years without a CDL, but now I must obtain one. What can I do? Where can I rent a truck. At least I know a CDL driver who will help. He does not own a truck. -

Up in MN we have co. That rent out trucks and time i.e. 1 hour to used to the truck and ise of the same truck for testing, for a small fee. Maybe you have something simmiler? Also can you rent a class truck without a cdl? 1 more you have a truck rated for 35 grand but its not a cmv? No air brakes im guessing

windsmith, ty for your reply. I asked Penski if they'd rent me a truck to test with, and they said they don't rent out for that. I'll try Ryder. Hope they have CDL trucks.
street beater, ty for responding. You asked: "Also can you rent a class truck without a cdl?" I know a licensed CDL driver who will rent it for me maybe. He would have to drive it to and from the test spot too, of course.
My truck is not a CDL truck; manufactured as a 25,000 lb gvwr, but after I was ticketed for overweight, I upped the tag to 35,000. Now I still need a CDL to drive it with over 26,000. Hydraulic brakes, yes.
I've tried to upload pics, but they always fail. No clue why; they're JPEG.Last edited: Jun 2, 2014

When inquiring at Ryder about a CDL truck, what should I ask for? Is it called a "class" truck, a "CDL rated" truck, or would just I ask for a truck capable of carrying loads up to 35,000? After my negative experience with Penski, I want to phrase my question correctly.
I'd really like to test with a straight truck with hydraulic brakes like own, but is it true that ALL cdl trucks only have air brakes?
It makes no sense at all to me that I need a CDL to drive my truck BUT I cant use my own truck to test with. I really only need a class B CDL, right? -
Yes a B is all you need. No it does not need air brakes, your cdl will have a no air brakes note on the back. You can test for it if you want. If you get a air brake truck however you will need to permit for and pass air brake endorsment. One of the strait trucks in my co fleet is hydro brake at 33,600 so they are out there. What you need to do is call up tell thwm you want to rent a strait truck but you dont have air brake endorsment . Be aware if you rent a truck that isint up to snuff your wasting your time so be sure its good to go. Your truck is not a B truck if it was built as a 25,000 so you uped the tag to run over spec? Did you get hit for over gross or over axle? If it was over axle then uping you gvw did nothing for the issue, if it was due to over gross then yes it will cover that. Id be carefull running over spec as if theres a crack up they might say you were running above the limits of the trucks rating regardless of what you had it tagged for.
Ps you might try looking for a courior that would rent you his truck for the test. I owned a 33600 no air brake 26' that i ran o/o local p and d with i would have rented it out for a buck and a half to 200 for 2
