Moving companies often hire drivers with little or no experience to do local work. You have to do the packing and loading though too.

the problem with temp companies is that there are so many drivers now. it's unreal. it's not even worth the time to apply.

i applied at 2 companies last year. hoping to kill some time since my construction job came to a halt real early last year. 4 months later. i only got one call. and it happened to be right after i got off work that one and had to work the next day.

not one call while i was sitting around sucking my thumb.

The larger the city and market area, the easier it will be to get a local gig!

Your post really seemed to really put a lot of the things I've been thinking about into perspective. I wouldn't say I'm suffering out here, but I am certainly very uncomfortable. I have been getting claustrophobia in the sleeper berth some days and honestly been getting some moderate anxiety when I'm alone and not driving. The other thing I don't like is the scheduling sometimes. I hate waiting all day for a load and having to drive through the night. Even though it's technically legal, I just dont have that kind of endurance all the time. The good thing is it seems rare with my company.

I really don't want to do OTR for much more than six months. I am even looking at companies that are more sales oriented in sub-CDL class trucks (under 26,000lbs). I realize the money may or may not be there.

Either way, I will write on this board how things work out!

That's what I'm thinking with Denver. It hasn't been hit as hard as some of the other major metro areas with this economy disaster. (I hope)

Try pro build hauling lumber. I have a friend the works at the one in charleston. I believe they are based out of denver. He started out as a driver and now runs operations, seems like a good company and promote from with in. They have small and big trucks. I recently filled out an app for them my self. Also smaller route sales, right now I gaurnetee ice venders are hiring, not sure how it is there in the summer but sure ice sells it sells itself when its hot. It is only seasonal but will get you home through the summer so you can line something up. Selling ice pays well too I would bring home over a $1000 a week after taxes but we have beaches here. But man I bet it sells there to I'm sure there are lakes and boats and campgrounds, construction sites and gas stations. It is a little labor intensive but throwing that ice u will be in good shape. That is probably your best bet, thay also have small and big trucks and you are paid by the amount of ice you sell but there is no selling to it just look in the box if it needs ice you fill it up. I promise you will make more than you are on the road woth set days off, benefits, and good pay. See if you have reddy ice there.
