I definitely agree about the unemployment $$$. They also usually offer money for CDL training. I wouldn't get in too big of hurry to jump ship. Why not take their money while you can get it?
Does your buddy live near you? Does he like to get home on a regular basis? If so you might try and find someone that runs by both houses if possible.
Looking for some Serious advice!

We used to work for Willis shaw/ Clay hyder they were based out of Florida. not sure what it's like to work for them now but check them out.
Let me say, I don't think you can just go down to the court house get your CDL and have many company's looking at you.
they are going to want you to go to school, that is my opinion what do you other guys think. AM i right here?
Also i thought it would be great too when I talked my hubby into going into trucking school over 20 years ago... But wait till your in Idaho and your wife calls you saying your baby is sick or the toilet is stuck or what ever. It wasn't that bad for us cause we had no kids and still don't but we were together.
sure it's fun at times out there on the road and I can see your point now that you think you might be loosing your job. but i would never suggest anyone with kids that are used to having dad at home look into running cross country.
It's hard to be away, I can't tell you the funerals, i've missed cause i was on the other side of the world, the birthdays, and thanksgivings, the good times. it's hard to call home and hear everyone laughing while you sit in a dock trying to get a load off.
I understand your love of the road and that you are wanting to support your family, I just wonder is this the best thing for them. Hey if you could get a job where you could take your wife and home school your boy on the road i'd say go for it. But it's not likely that will happen.
I say all of this out of concern for your wife and son, and I'm just saying think... pray.... and weigh out all your options. Write it out on paper and see what you come up with. If you decided you're going then we will help you in any way we can.
I'm going to read back and see how long you been married and if you mention how old your son is.

Whoa...thanks for all the information. I'm sooo #### glad I stumbled onto this site.
I'm taking every bit of this information in and i'm slowing way down. Ya know if one person just says it, you take it with a grain of salt, but when 98% of you are telling me and agreeing to the same thing, i'm gonna listen. Sounds cliche, but "most" truckers are always truthful and up front so I'm gonna follow ya'lls advice and backer down a few notches.
Again I want to thank all you ladies and gents for suppling me with the info I need to make the correct decision for my family and my self! -

Man we are glad you found this site too and we live this life so we're trying to help. It's not an easy life and we may be bombarding you with ideas right now but we tell what we know.
If your kid was 17 and you'd been married for 20 years i for one would be more apt to say sure go for it, in a few years your child will be on his own and your wife can go with you. I hope the economy works out where things go back to normal but for now its rough out here.
Also when you drive company you are at the mercy of that company. Look for a thread that says how often these company drivers get home. When we was company years back when we first started we would be out for 6 weeks at a time.
We'd talk to the dispatcher and say you got a load taking us home or through the house and they never did. But you'd run into a guy weeks later that just delivered 100 miles from your house.
I'm curious my own self how the company driver gets home now.
I may start a thread on that if i can't find one.

My partner Matt, he worked for England and was loving it. He bacame a trainer in no time... BUT, he left in Sept and I didn't see him again Nov. He didn't make it home but once. Worse of all, his son my god son is 14 and needs him the most, but doesn't work out cause he is on the road. But mostly he needs him cause his mother is a ##### (they are divorced). She uses the poor boy like a maid. If I could intervine I would. But anyways yeah he's been out ther for some time.
