You seem to have a very narrow perspective of how a driver is compensated for his time. Mileage pay isn't the only renumeration a driver receives and not all drivers are paid by the mile. A lot of companies pay a percentage of the load. Then there's all those incidental's like stop pay, detention pay (yeah, some companies actually pay this), tarp pay and so on.

Say a flatbedder, such as myself, is paid 40 cpm and averages 2500 miles a week. That would be $52,000 a year, in your thinking.

But, if I tarped 3 loads, during that 2500 mile average week, at $30 per tarping, that would be an additional $4680 per year. In my experience, I think I tarped about 4 out of 5, but let's not split hairs.

Then throw in a multiple stop load, just once every other week. Extra stops pay $25 per stop and assume that one multiple stop load had 3 extra stops. There's another $1950. Again, I probably had 3 or 4 multiple stop loads a month, not 2.

How about $15 per hour for detention and you received that once a month, for 5 hours total. That's another $900 per year. Layover of $150, once a month would add another $1800 per year. How about quarterly incentives, for fuel and accident free miles of 1 cpm each. Assuming you do a good job, conserving fuel and not run over anything, that adds another $2600 per year.

    Your way of thinking: $52,000
    The real world: $63,930
Difference, between knowledge and guesswork: $11,990 per year.

been a cpl weeks since anyone posted on here but just had to reply. Yeah its not the best hourly wages in the world but u have to take the good with the bad. What other job can u have where if u get tired pull over and take a nap if ur hungry stop and eat want a smoke have 1 get to see the country meet great people....for the most part....see the real America...i love trucking though its true most companys dont give respect to the drivers that they deserve since we keep the companies in bussniess and we keep America moving. This is just my 2 cents I know not everyone will agree but if u dont like the industry then find another line of work...pretty simple

Hey MarineVet!!! How you doin, brother?? This post sums it up PERFECTLY!! The money is there if you are willing to pay your dues. Tankergirl and many others on here have just slugged it out, and came out on top. Even though I'm no longer in a drivers seat anymore, I just cannot seem to get the diesel out of my veins. Trust me, MarineVet has been there and done that. He gave me advice before I ever got my CDL and I talked to him by phone many times on the road getting advice. He came to CA as a lease operator when I was there and had dinner with my family and I (and drinks at a kewl little bar there in Fontana). He's a real no bs'r.

Get back to me MV!!! Got a lot to tell you about!
