Usually only if you're trying to clear emission codes. For tests and calibrations a password shouldn't be needed.

You would certainly know more than me. I've only watched it done once or twice. But the one time I had my cruise control settings changed on my 6nz they had to generate a password.
Could you have a dealer set the password to something specific so a person knows them and can input them manually?

Only times I've ever needed passwords were for anything emission related. Caterpillar's way of tracking who's doing what with the emission systems.

We never dealt with anything on-road either. No market for it as nobody ran trucks old enough to still have CAT power. Maybe the on-road stuff is a little more password reliant?

Interesting. Guessing if that is the case they made the onbthe road engines more password protected to keep drivers from changing things companies didn't want changed

This is the only thing i could find about the password generators in the link. here is a copy and paste
Please keep in mind that some ecm settings for example, speed limit requires factory password. The factory password generator is not included in this application

well dam im happy as hell. i didnt buy off that vendor though. Paid 500 shipped with full dealer version software that expires in 2050.
A legit dealer try to charge me couple grand for communicator and then have to pay cat 1 thousand for a one year subscription for non dealer version. So basically if you use it only once a year, that will cost you a grand. Im good to go! thanks internet. heres a screen shot of my expiration and dealer
