Usually only if you're trying to clear emission codes. For tests and calibrations a password shouldn't be needed.

Could you have a dealer set the password to something specific so a person knows them and can input them manually? -
Only times I've ever needed passwords were for anything emission related. Caterpillar's way of tracking who's doing what with the emission systems.
We never dealt with anything on-road either. No market for it as nobody ran trucks old enough to still have CAT power. Maybe the on-road stuff is a little more password reliant? -

Please keep in mind that some ecm settings for example, speed limit requires factory password. The factory password generator is not included in this application -
well dam im happy as hell. i didnt buy off that vendor though. Paid 500 shipped with full dealer version software that expires in 2050.
A legit dealer try to charge me couple grand for communicator and then have to pay cat 1 thousand for a one year subscription for non dealer version. So basically if you use it only once a year, that will cost you a grand. Im good to go! thanks internet. heres a screen shot of my expiration and dealer
