Hi, I been a company driver for two years looking to switch to owner operator soon and just trying to figure where to start. With getting a truck I just want to get out of Western with my teammate and actually make real money my check is 265 today what am i goin to tell my wife omg. She's going to have my head I got bills to pay and western is full of it
Where do you live? You drive for Western Express? Experience how long? Tickets? Accidents? Felonies? Any criminal record? DUIs? Do you have hazmat? Twic card? Depending where you live and all the other questions you can make good money after a year. Like clear a $1200 to 1500 a week.
If your wife isn't happy with your earnings now, just wait until she sees what a loss your trucking operation will entail. Before you do something as drastic as truck ownership, by all means, try a different company job. You couldn't possibly have picked a worse time for truck ownership, for starters, did you know, the gubment wants to raise the min. liability from $750K to $5MILLION! How you going to cover THAT premium? Tip of the iceberg, and with a truck title, may as well get the divorce started, ask me how I know. Conversely, now is simply the BEST time for a company driver. You have 2 years in, as long as it's clean, good enough for even the best companies. Remember, companies don't care how many bills you have, and if you think you have bills now, go buy a truck,,,now, maybe some day in the future, when rules will force outlaws to haul bootleg trailers again, but until then, by all means, drive for someone else. Wifey will be a lot happier.
Just remember, as an O/o the grass is not greener its still grass so as much as they gypped you as a driver alot of O/o's get gypped too. Whether it's a Broker off a load board, dispatcher as a lease on O/o not liking you or company fudging the rate cons you can still get ripped off. Owning a truck, now in this Freight Recession isn't as easy as a few years ago when rates were high. Probably another reason why a good majority of companies either closed because of the current market or figured they would cut drivers miles altogether. It's a cut throat industry. Remember, this is quoted: 'Every trucking company's profit margin is different, but the average is 6% to 8% percent profit of the annual income per truck" To much false info given out to those who are newer. You're near Atlanta....are you willing to try another company gig or are you dead set on begin an owner op? You've got enough experience to work other places and make viable money. Like the others said, if your record is clean you can go a lot of places.
ATL, Yes, 2yrs exp with my rookie yr included, No ticket, no accident just one incident under training but my trainer only had 6months of experience. No felonies never seen handcuffs. I drink only twice a year but not since I got my CDL. I don't have my hazmat my teammate who's almost ready to retire might have his, but I don't have mine, always wanted a twic card but I don't have
I'm not deadset on owner operator I'm kinda half way in and half way out with the owner operator thing I just posted the basics
Do you need to be with your partner? I think your record is great/good. You can make more money. UPS pays the best for line haul. Problem is rates are down. So that makes it worse to get a new job. So if I had a wife, I would look at the post office. Good vacation and decent pay, better home time. You would get a pension and be home more often. UPS offers a pension too. Line haul is a mostly a local job. The ltl sector. Cyro pays real well. Air gas, linde. Praxair. What about Walmart? That's home weekly and a 100k a year.
