Whats the best radio to start off with to get alot of power out of it. I don't use my radio often and its just a regular cobra 29. It really sucks at picking up and putting my signal out so i hate using it. I want a radio with good power so that when I do use it will do the task i want it too.

So whats the best radio to start with and whats the best thing to do to get more power out of it. Hook up an amp to it? what are the option I have. I'm pretty much a newby with cbs don't know much at all

the 29 is usually a fine radio . sounds like it has either had a golden screwdriver in it or you got a lemon . one suggestion would be to sent it to a REAL tech and get it both tuned and aligned .

of course theres nothing wrong with using that as an excuse to get get a new radio . i know i have , lol . assuming that either it cost too much to do the T&A on the radio or to fix it ........
am cb , id go with uniden .
ssb cb , philipino grant or cobra 148 or a galaxy 959/979 .

id always go with a seperate amp over one built into a high powered radio . its just too darn much stuff and heat jammed into a lil box with inadaquate cooling in my opinion , and we all know what opinions are like....

having said that about radios , its important to remember your antenna system will play the biggest part in the performance of your cb setup . in fact id check the antenna/coax/mount and swr befor i replaced or fixed that radio . whats your swr ? did you check the coax and mount for contiunity ? whats your antenna and where is it mounted ? how is it mounted ? how are the rf gain and mic gain on the radio set ?

do you have someone to let you try your radio on their (properly performing) antenna ? if it works great its not the radio .

Thanks for the info. I don't have the cobra29 anymore though so i'd rather just start off with a good radio. out of the radios you listed would you be able to tell me why you chose those ones? Also is the Galaxy 979 better then the 959? less pretend money isn't a big issue, whats the best radio to start with and good for upgrading?

I have a Connex 4600 with a Road King mic. My antenna is a single Wilson 2000. I am very happy with it. Since you say you are not too familiar with cb radio, make sure someone who is qualified tunes the antenna to get the lowest SWR. Thats the most important part of any radio setup.

i agree with brickhauler , who tunes a radio can make all the difference in the world . you cant turn a sows ear into a silk purse , but , you can turn a silk purse into a sows ear .

    i run a 2018 xtremem mic into a sparkified uniden 78ltw into a texas star 500v into a 10k on the roof .

Honestly not to be rude or anything what makes you think 10K's are better than a Wilson or other coiled antenna? Is it just hype or are 10K's worth the bucks?

On the Galaxy's, only the 2 digit series are dual finals. 33,44,66,88 and so on. I'm not 100% sure the 33 is though. I know on the Connex 3300 there is a regular 3300 which is single final and the 3300hp is a dual final.
The 3 digit Galaxys are all legal output cb radios and my cb doctor friend said that the way they are made its hard to do too much with them, something about surface mount transistors. I've heard guys talking on them and I thought it didn't sound half bad. Antenna tuning is pretty important in my book.
