    @OLDSKOOLERnWV

I just had two more questions for you.

    1) Did you have to redrill for the mounts for the eight horsepower or did that bolt right in?

    2) we have this engine from an old Simplicity it is a nine horsepower Briggs & Stratton but apparently the shaft is only 2 and 7/8 in Long. The newer engine looks like it is 3 and 21/32 long.

I think that conical cover has to come off the front and it looks to me like the adapter bolts on to that and removing that cover would make the shaft longer. I'm not sure what the situation is with the seal and dirt and all that type of thing if the cover is removed. As it is, it is definitely way shorter than the newer machine.

Do you think there's a way that this engine can work to run that pump? I believe it does have the same 1 inch shaft and quarter inch keyway.

    Sorry I just remembered I hadn’t responded…

(1). My engine was a replacement that was installed when the trailer still belonged to EZ. I started pulling this lowboy for them in 2005. It was already drilled and tapped for the adapter.

(2). Not sure you’ll have much success since it’s not drilled for an adapter. You would have to get the adapter to fit that pattern, then get it lined up as close to perfect as you can. Pull the back section of the block off and drill and tap it off the engine.

The Joy couplings as we always called them will allow for a little out of center but it’s minimal, very minimal.

Sometimes it takes some doing to get it all together, that’s why I mentioned one the little Case Ingersoll tractors. You get the engine, adapter, and hydraulic pump already bolted together, mount it, hook 2 hoses up, and go to work…

The engine you have may have been compatible with the pto for small engines too…

My trail king has a Honda GX390 I believe. Been a great motor, pump bolts on next to engine with a love joy style coupler, hydro fluid tank mounted above with a filter. Electric start has failed me once, it was -17f out. Pull started in a few pulls.

I would go with a honda gx series engine and a 2 stage pump. I worked for a shop that did lots of small engine work around 2012-2015 and we were always working on little gas powered fertilizer pumps…probably because there was a fertilizer plant about 1/2 mile north of the shop…but of all the different little pos engines they had the honda gx engines were by far the longest lasting and most reliable. The gc engine are Genuine Crap lol. Dad and I have had a gx390 powered power washer around the shop here for probably around 10 years and I would guess it’s got to be getting into the thousands of hours. It almost always starts on the first pull. I hate to admit this but I bet it’s only had 2 or 3 oil changes and a few air filter cleanings but nothing else. I had an old Wisconsin hydraulic power pack (still do) and can’t really complain about it but it can be quite temperamental on starting.
at the end of the day I would just put the wet kit on the truck…starts every time and if it doesn’t well I guess you really don’t need the wet kit anyway. Also far more versatile and will give faster cycle times on the trailer.

Well it turns out we're going to need the pump and the coupler along with the engine.

I just wanted to make certain that the pump pictured above is the correct pump/ gph, etc to run the lowbed.

Also will that pump and adapter fit the Honda GX390, I think we found one of them.

If so, we'll get it right away.

I would go with electric motor and pump. Actually I would go with a wet kit. But electric motor before a gas pony. Also you need to know how much flow and how much pressure the trailer requires.

Also, I'm considering just hooking up the wind line on my truck. So here's the question with that.

Will a PTO that is set up for a dump truck, can that be used to run the hydraulics for a low bed??

Again. You need to know the flow rate and pressure of the pump. Yes it will work once the flow and pressure is adjusted accordingly. You will need to set it up as a dual line pressure/return if it’s not already. Most dumps I believe are single line.
